I have XP Pro, and also MSDN, but I'm not sure if IIS came with Windows XP or my Development Tools. I thought it came with Windows XP, but I was trying to find it on my nephew's XP Home edition and it wasnt' there. Maybe it comes with XP Pro????

For some reason I'm thinking I installed it from my Windows XP CD. But that was so long ago that I can't remember if it was that, or my Dev Tools. It's probably with the Dev Tools too. But my nephew want's to install it, and I thought it may have come with XP.

 If it doesn't come with XP Home, is there anyway to run IIS for free on his pc just to learn development? He's 13 and just learning html. I wanted to set him up with his own web server.

Thanks in advance...

As I understand it, IIS is available with XP Pro but not XP Home.
I also understand that it is possible to install it in XP Home but that it could be very difficult and cause problems.
You could always try Apache.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I guess we can skip it for now. He's just starting and has enough to learn. Maybe later we'll get him XP Pro. Or, if he want's, he can start learning php and Apache. But I can't help much there.

well, from what I gather, Apache isn't much different from IIS...

and the PHP bit is the same regardless...
you could get a package, like WAMPserver (http://www.wampserver.com/en/download.php) or similar - this installs a basic package which is not bad for starting to learn PHP/MySQL
The only problem is that most of these installers have limited libraries, and pretty soon you're gonna have to install everything from scratch again to reconfigure it for more complex applications.

For Reference's Sake:
To install IIS on XP, go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Add/Remove Programs
Once in there, click Add/Remove Windows Components on the right-side menu.
Check IIS in the list that comes up and proceed.

If IIS isn't in that list, then it isn't a part of that version of XP. (And, no, it doesn't come with XP Home that I know of)

Definately does not come with XP home. It is possible to Hack it into XP home but not really recommended, could possibly cause problems/instabilities.

IIS comes with Windows XP Professional and with Windows Server 2000 and Windows Server 2003 families.
