View Full Version : I think my server is caching web pages

I've got a few webpages on a Windows Server 2003 Web Edition machine, and very often when I try to change a file or upload a newer version of a file to overwrite an older version, and then go test out the changes in a web browser, I won't see any of the changes. Sometimes even when I delete the file all together, it still appears to have access to it through the browser. This even happens after clearing all cookies and temporary internet files and history on the client side. I conclude, therefore, that Windows Server 2003 must be caching the pages on its own and referring to those instead of the newer/updated files. Is this true? Where does it cache them? How can I stop it from doing this?

Have you got a proxy in between your local PC and the server?

I don't think so. How can I find out for sure?

well.. the connection settings for IE (or other browser) will tell you if your computer is seeking out a proxy...
but if you're on an office network, you may be going through a proxy without realising it...

OK, I checked my IE settings and it doesn't seem like I'm using a proxy. I checked under the advanced tab of "internet options" and there's a checkbox for "Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections" which is unchecked. Also, under the "connections" tab, I clicked on LAN settings and in the dialogue box that popped up there was a check box that said "use a proxy server for your LAN" which was unchecked.
On the other hand, I am working from within an office network and the server is within the same office network, but I am going through the outside world to get to it. So, as you say, I might be using a proxy server without knowing it after all.
Any further thoughts from anyone?
