Here, if ya wanna do something illegal (why??), you can build a page on geocities and then move it to a new provider... Since geocities owns your content when you upload it, you are breaking copyright infringment.
Should geocites be able to own your content legaly?
That's why I don't use free hosts, they are all like that. All have come stupid rules and regulations.

Yes, I know that, but, will we think of cfhosting as a bunch of 0s and 1s? He is more of a 0 than a 1.

hmmm...not sure where you heard that from...
7. CONTENT SUBMITTED TO YAHOO GEOCITIES
Yahoo does not claim ownership of the Content you place on your Yahoo GeoCities Site. By submitting Content to Yahoo for inclusion on your Yahoo GeoCities Site, you grant Yahoo the world-wide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, modify, adapt and publish the Content solely for the purpose of displaying, distributing and promoting your Yahoo GeoCities Site on Yahoo's Internet properties. This license exists only for as long as you continue to be a Yahoo GeoCities homesteader and shall be terminated at the time your Yahoo GeoCities Site is terminated.
Kevin
Doesn't that right there say they don't claim your site as theirs FOR AS LONG AS YOU REMAIN A MEMBER. Basicly doesn't that say if you switch hosts the contant is theirs? I might be wrong as I don't know much about legal stuff.
Thanks,
Paul

No, it does not say its their property, it says just the opposite in the first sentence.
"Yahoo does not claim ownership of the Content you place on your Yahoo GeoCities Site"
There is no mention of geocities restricting content that is on their servers from being posted on other servers. You do grant them the right, as stated in the second sentence to:
"....non-exclusive license.....to reproduce, modify, adapt and publish the Content solely for the purpose of displaying, distributing and promoting your Yahoo GeoCities Site on Yahoo's Internet properties."
note: its a non-exclusvie license not an exclusive license.
Its pretty much a quid pro quo aggreement. They let you use their technology for free, and you let them use your content for free (to the limits defined in the TOS). In most cases it works quite well.
Any webhosting service (free or fee based) that tried to claim ownership or content stored on their servers even if only for the duration of a membership, will not be in buisness for very long and would most likely find itself in court eventually.
If anyone knows of a free hosting service that explicitly claims (or even implies) such an agreement between its users and itself, I would like to see it.
At one time, I believe it was Geocities before Yahoo aquired them but I could be wrong, Geocities did try and make a claim that they owned the content stored on their servers, but the public backlash was so strong they reasonably backed down from such a stupid position. Who would want to publish original material and then store it on Geocities only to lose their right of ownership, only a complete idiot is who. It was probably not legal anyway and most likely would not of stood up in a court challenge.

Kevin

Well the URL is about 2 miles long. They delete your account for the stupidest resons. When I e-mailed them I never got replies. I might be wrong as I haven't used geocities for 2 years now, but back then they really sucked.

Paul I used them for a while (just to start off with). Thier customer service always answered my questions. Also, you don't need thier url, you can get a short url elsewhere. The only things I didn't like about it was the small corner popup ad, less space, and no advanced stuff. However, it's a nice place to start learning web builing.

I agree, but I wasn't too advanced back then so I didn't need all those features so it was never too bad. I didn't like them cause of the above. I then went to hypermart.net and they were great.
Thanks,
Paul

Hosting and domains are very, very cheap nowadays. And free hosts are getting fewer and worse by the day.
So the end of the free host is coming...faster than you think...

All the more reason not to go to the pub for once a year and spend the money saved on a cheap domain for that year :)
