View Full Version : Static Entry file?
A site I'm working on is not live, and I'm told I have to make a static entry on a workstation to make this I.P. address
216.138.253.204
actually link to the correct domain. Since I'm no expert, what is a static entry, and how do I do one? The reason I'm asking this in the linux section is because the server was moved over from Win IIS to *nix Apache, thus causing a problem.

Does the site you want to be able to view connected to a dsl modem or a router? What linux distro?

Does it matter how it's connected? Or are you worried about multiple domains on a single IP?
As for the distrubtion, I don't rightly know, I don't own the server, I have yet to actually get any other info about the server ('cept it's *nix), in fact, netcraft can't even tell me what it's running, because the IP still points the the wrong domain.

Is this the site;
http://www.thefacts.org/
That's not the correct site. The correct site, jigvideo.com is still stuck on it's old server, thus, keeping it's old version.
I've made the static entry into my hosts file. Found in etc/hosts. But still, to no avail.

Who is your domain name servers .Did you tell them about the change?
Okay. Here's what happened.
In Etc/hosts I added the I.P. Address and the www.jigvideo.com so that it would reroute. Well, woopedy doo. It worked. So I log onto another of my computers and check out the site. No go. That means I'd have to change every persons host file in the world just so they could see the site. Not happening. I'm going to make an increased effort to talk to these hosters. Thanks for all the help comprookie.

Simplified version.....
Keyboard>Browser>Registrar>DNSserver>WEBSITE>Browser
You need to setup a DNSserver(domain name server) to make all incoming connections for www.jigvideo.com point to: 216.138.253.204 ......
Tell your registrar to use ZONEEDIT.com as the dns servers...... setup a zoneedit.com account (a dns service provider) and point that url to the 216.138.253.204 IP address.
OR
if your registrar will do DNS hosting for you, then have them point their dns servers to 216.138.253.204 for you. Using zoneedit.com allows you to make the changes yourself if you have an IP address that might change periodically. IE: Cable or non-static DSL lines.
