View Full Version : 123webmaster Partly Restored

123webmaster.com has been partly restored after the recent hacker attack, however the most recent database recovered is still several months old.

If anyone is interested, I'm looking for some help in "scrubbing" the database. This will include finding dead links, suggesting new categories, suggesting new links, and so on. The categories had some major changes over the past few months that were lost because of the old database usage. The more help, the merrier, so if you'd like to pitch in, it would be much appreciated. Just leave a post here saying that you are interested, and I will contact you with more details. Fair warning though, it will likely be a large undertaking, and will last quite some time, so let me know just how much time you can dedicate, so I know how to place you in the efforts.

Also, I have been considering for some time adding premium" resources to 123webmaster (resources that are not free). What do you all think of this idea? Thanks for your input and feedback.

Jason,

I'm willing to help out where I can, although I'm pretty busy at work at the moment so I could probably manage a couple of hours a day, maybe looking for dead links?

Let me know and I'll do as much as I can. I don't mind how long it takes, I'm not planning on going anywhere! ;)

Hi Jason,
I could pitch in atleast an hour a day. Also the premium resources wouldn't be a bad idea, it would bring you more money to manage the servers.

Yeah, I agree, it's worth a shot. :)

Um.. I get the feeling Jason was meaning adding a section to 123web listing sites and services that are not free. To date 123web has been listing only free stuff on the net. I don't think he means a premium section on 123web where you would have to pay to gain access. So, no extra $$$ to manage the server :(

I might be wrong though...

Ah, you could be right.

Maybe you could use some of the revenue to hire a security consultant ;)

THAT IS THE wrong emoticon for the situation. Sorry but I am also mad about the hacker.

Jason,
Count me in, I'd be more than willing to help all i can. Whatever it takes to get the site back up, and running. I'm disabled, and can't work, so i can devote some time to a worthwhile cause. Besides with my site gone, i have time for other things.

Also, I think the premium resource idea is a good one, i can't afford it but others probably can.

I'm a firm believer on 123 webmaster, and http city, and hope we can get back online soon.

just found out about the hacking - how awful! :( i hope whoever is responsible will get what's coming to them in some way....
anyway, i would be happy to help in the cleanup operation in any way i can. however, i could only give 1-2 hours a week which probably isn't of any use. but if it is, give me a shout.

Thanks to all that replied! Your enthusiasm towards rebuilding 123webmaster is much appreciated, and will go a long way towards making 123webmaster whole again.

In response to the premium listings that I was discussing, I didn't necessarily mean that 123webmaster would be selling premium services (which it might down the line), but more immediately, I just meant that it would list services that had a fee, in addition to free services. I will get back to this thread regarding positions for categories and duties as soon as the onsite articles and features of 123webmaster are restored, which should be accomplished within the next day.

If anyone else is interested in helping out, or if you have anymore questions, please feel free to ask, and I will make sure that everything is addressed when instructions are given out.

Whilst I'm not the most technically minded person, I can certainly check for broken links etc.

Let me know, I have a boring job :)

Out of interest were the httpcity user sites backed up at any time by you? Just wondered with all this talk of backups.

I would also be willing to help out. I finish school tommorow so I have the whole of the summer free.

I can spend the time I have been checking for news to check out links. I am able to help for about an hour or so a day. So Jason if there is anything I can do Please let me know. If we all donated a few hours maybe we would be rebuilding in a day or two.

I've followed ( as best I can between classes and life) this sad, infuriating tale. I'm no tech wiz... couldn't write a program if you held a gun to my head... but I want to help somehow.

My heart goes out to ALL that have lost pages and data through this childish, inane attack.

If there is some little thing I can do to help... tracking down links, or anything... let me know. I've only got week-ends (my week-end starts though on Thursdays.. :) ) but maybe just that little bit of time can help.

I will be glad to help, I can handle 2/3 hours a day untill Sept. and again starting in Oct. Checking dead links would be my best contribution, but willing to try my hand at what ever is needed.
I have 15 pages hosted by httpcity and want to keep them there. I have them all backed up on my hard drive.
Thanks for all your work.

Ok Guys,

With things finally *starting* to settle down somewhat after the recent network hack attack, I'd like to get going with all of you volunteers that are still interested in restoring the 123webmaster database. If you are just interested in reporting dead links, you can just start surfing through the site, and clicking the "report 404" link next to each dead link you find.

However, if you are interested in adding new links, which the database is now in dire of need of, send an email to guides@123webmaster.com . You will also be able to submit deletions, modifications, and even category changes (which will be passed through to a final review database before finally being added to the site) via a cgi admin area. The categories in the most need are Scripts ( all sub sections, but especially PHP which was almost fully lost), the Multimedia/Graphics category needs a lot of work, and there are plenty of other sections that could benefit from a few hours a day. To perform this task, you must have very descriptive writing skills, and be able to sum up the most important features of each resource, and the drawbacks as well.

P.S.
I'm hoping whkoh the human link-o-pedia will also have some time to donate to these efforts. I appreciate the hand guys, I look forward to hearing from everyone interested :)
