To get a good ranking you must have good content and design. I don't really understand your 2nd question about 'good free search engines'?

Google is good. Almost any site can get listed on Google, but it may be hard to get a *good* listing. Google ranks it sites by the number of other sites linking to it. So if your are a participant in links exchanges, then submit to Google.

Be sure to add precise metatags to your pages, with title, description and keywords.

There are some "robots" that add your site to a number of search engines, I just can't remember the name of them.
