Hi guys,

just joined, wanted to say hello and find out where I should discuss html security issues that relate to html wallpapers used in Windows 2000.

Advice appreciated.

Cheers

Hi KWJams,

thanks for that. Wallpapers are the backgrounds on the desktops of Windows. They can be either html pages, JPEGs, PNGs, BMPs etc.

Cheers

What kind of security issues are you having with wallpapers?

What I've done is create an html page/file as the background to the desktop. In the html there are a few images which are rollovers i.e. the images have an <a href> tag which link to programs locally installed on the computer. The problem is that when I click on the image to start the software it prompts me to download with the 'File Download' dialog box but I can't disable the check box 'Always ask before opening this type of file'.

I've searched through the Registry and turned off just about all security I can think of but it still won't do what I want.

I figure there must be something, either in the Registry or ion the code, that I'm missing.

You're probably thinking 'why doesn't he just use icons?' They don't offer the same flexibility.

I know with Win XP you can right click a desktop shortcut to a program and change the icon graphic ... But that does not sound like what you are looking for.

I am not sure if you can incorporate a desktop / wallpaper image that has active functions other than just a static back ground image.

Catatonic - this is normal behaviour for any html page regardless of it being in an IE browser window or on the windows desktop (which will use IE to render it).

You can disable the prompt with a registry hack, but there are two issues with this - it is a global setting, so you will not be prompted when you surf the net at all, and you could accidentally install malware, and second, it is a registry hack, which should only be done if you know what you are doing.

Hi Horus_Kol,

I hear and understand what you're saying but browsing the Web is not a problem - this computer will not be put onto the Net. I'm familiar with going into the Registry so if you have a suggestion I'm all ears and happy to learn.

Thanks

i know of the hack - but no details, as I never wanted to use it - the microsoft knowledge base has it, though...

G'day Horus_Kol,

I've searched in the MS KB and haven't been able to find it. Maybe I'm searching with the wrong criteria but I've found things that refer to media files but nothing else.

I'd really appreciate a pointer.

Thanks

Welcome to the HTMLForums!

I'd probably try out the TOOLS OF THE TRADE > Software and Hardware Info forum.

Good Luck.
