Hi Gang!
Seems like the forum has continued to grow at an explosive pace! I'd like to take this time to help everyone here formally meet, there are so many regulars around here, but so many still feel like strangers. Lets see if we can't get to know a little more about each other. I know that some of you may already have some of this in your profiles, but profiles aren't always the most read items on the forum. So from each of you, I'd like to hear about:
1. Age
2. Occupation
3. Interests
4. Your website
5. Why do you come here?
6. Something personal

We'll probably be upgrading to VB2 pretty soon, I think that has some sort of a chat or messaging system built into it. Guess we'll see all the bells and whistles that it has soon enough. I believe one of the features is the ability to add avatars (little thumbnail images under your name/title).

Oh, you guys had it soooo rough! I never owned a game system more advanced that the 8bit Nintendo (although I started out on something called the Intellivision which I GUARANTEE nobody here heard of) and I didn't first get connected to the web until I was 19! Dang kids and their e-lec-tronics.

The first computer I remember having was some kind of Texas Instruments thingy and we only had one game on it that we played to death. Then we got an Amstrad CPC6128. That had some of the best games EVER!! Alright the graphics were crap compared to what they are today but the games had a much better playability rating. I learned a little bit of Basic on that too. Aah, I loved that computer! Those older computers had so much more character.
The only games console I've ever owned is my beloved Sega Megadrive. I still have that, I love it and couldn't bear to part with dear old Sonic. ;)

I remember Intellivison. My kids had it..or my older one did. How's that for aged? And when we went to programming school (none of which I remember) we coded on paper forms and then had the stuff keyed in by keyboard operators, or did it ourselves if we could get time on the keypunch machine. We only saw a computer on a field trip.
I didn't know if new people were supposed to answer the questions here, having just recently posted an introduction, but since I'm here anyway:
1.Age - 51, but still alive.
2.Occupation - Mostly a receptionist, occasionally an HTML hack at work, with some web adminstration on our e-commerce site thrown in, and I do freelance web design and maintenance, but that's sort by accident and sometimes under protest. I got busy and forgot to have a career.
3. Interests - Well, the web obviously, and my family - husband, two grown kids, one grand-kid. Then there's music. I got hooked on the web because I was an Arlo Guthrie (folksinger) fan and started hanging out on his web site. That eventually turned into having a bunch of friends who meet at his gigs all over the place. Mostly our families have become friends, too. The webmaster there became one of them and that's how I ended up learning some stuff about doing web sites. Now my son is in the music business and I go to his gigs, too, as well as doing his web site. All that doesn't leave a lot of time for much else these days.
4.My web site - Well, I use http://www.groupwwebs.com as my personal URL but it's the one I have the least time to work on.
5. Why I come here - I have lots to learn, if I can help, I like to do that, and I just enjoy talking about this stuff. You know..there aren't that many people who think that any of this makes for good conversation, so you find yourself thinking about it, but no one really wants to hear it. This forum feels the most comfortable, relaxed and genuinely friendly while still being very well run, of all the ones I've been to.

I had this old console which I inherited from my parents... It was about the size of a suitacase and had two controls attached by curly phone cord. They had little dials on like light dimmer switches which you basically twizzled up and down to control these two bats on screen. The most impressive thing was that it had FOUR games.
Your standard pong.
A 2 player tennis game. - The only difference to pong being a line in the middle of the screen that did absolutely nothing.
1 player vs the wall tennis game and...
2 player vs the wall tennis game! Otherwise known as squash.
Wow I miss that hunk of junk...

the monkey has experinced some evoloution with his computers as well!
1.)starting with something close to a laptop, with butons, bells, and several different colors.
2.)then the classic laptop with a red boarder for it's case, gray center and black text(text only displayed if you were "good") and could be rebooted when shaken upside down
3.)things almost caught on fire when the sheets of paper were placed over the monitor with a peg board appearance!
4.)i entered the "high class" society when equiped with a classic zenith
5.)the world became troubled when i evolved to the IBM ps2
6.)i had conquered almost everything, then i found new light in a 486 DX100
(there are some steps i'm missing, but you get the idea)
7.) and then today... the www is flourishing with a vast ammount of monkies like myself! with 1ghz power pc's and 800+ laptops, the monkey will change the way everyone thinks!
back to the grindstone!

Ah, the good 'ole days.
The Atari. (black & white pong. YES!)
The Atari 2600. (ooh...now comes color pong!)
Colecovision (the predecessor to Intellivision)
Intellevision
Commodore 64
Activision
Super Atari (or something like that)
Then all the Nintendo, PS and Sega stuff.

The Atari 2600 was my first game console. I still miss the Space Invaders game. It was my favorite game! Missile Command was a close second. Then there was Breakout and Super Breakout.

atari.... bringing back memories!
I had a atari 5600 or something like that. I was half game machine (accepted catridges in the top) and various ports for storage devices. I learned to code Basic on that old hunk o' junk! I would leave the computer on for days at a time (no blue screen o' death) just to make sure I could finish, and edit large programs as I had no storage device. Then I got a cassette storage drive. Would take from 1min to 45 minutes to load a program. As you would imagine, I was thrilled to discover floppy (5 1/4") disk drives! I used the commidor64/ 128 and a few others.
These last few posts leave the shrill sound of tape drives loading programs in my ears! ha! My sony laptop is a far cry from those early days!

Tape drives! Isn't it funny how we used to wait patiently for half an hour for a game to load from a tape drive. These days if something takes more that 5 seconds to load I kick my PC across the room in a fit of rage!
PCheese
05-23-2001, 07:44 AM
...scenario was when you sat through 20 minutes of a tape deck squealing it's way though some bizzare Kate Bush impression only for it to go deathly silent and have nothing happen while you cried and threatened your machine with tortures ranging from plucking its little rubber keys to filling the tape cassette with a jam like substance (possibly jam).
My first was a Commodore 16 +4 with the best ever game ever in the whole world ever - Icicle Works!
Which I later found out was a really bad port of Rockford / Boulderdash from the Atari.
Hmm, getting slightly spammy in here?

I haven't posted in a while, so I think I'll add something to this thread.
1) Well, I am currently 22 years old but that will change in about 3 weeks!
2) I work for a company called Afni. I used to have a cool job, but now I feel like a glorified babysitter. Afni is a call center and what I do is make sure that we have enough staffing to handle the call volume. I monitor and control call volume, I keep track of various statistics, I plan meetings and training, I work with scheduling extensively, etc. I'm only doing this in the meantime. My husband and I are moving to NYC and once I get my residency, I'm going to finish college. Not sure what I want to do yet, but either something in the music industry (radio, promotions, labels, concerts etc, I love music, my husband is in radio, I have lots of experience in that area, and love being able to use my creativity), or else web design. I've had no training and have only been really interested in it for a few months in my spare time, and I love how it combines my love of computers with creativity. I think with some formal training and more time to put into practice the things I'm learning, I could become good enough to do it professionally.
3) Well, as stated above, my interests are in music, computers, and being creative. I paint and draw, and I would love to get into photography. My website is another hobby. I LOVE traveling. I also love animals and currently have 4 cats.
4) My website is at http://www.stacyinthecity.com there are links to my 2 previous sites on that page so you can see how I've come a long way since I first started in the early days of the web. I think I first started playing around with html in 94 or so. My page has more info about me and my interests if anyone was wanting to hear more after question #3. I love the design I've got going there now, but its several months old so I've started playing around with a new design that I'm actually quite proud of. Its slow going though, since I really only work on my site in my (rare) spare time. I'll let you know when its up though!
5) I come here because everyone is very helpful and all my questions have been answered by several people all lending their unique insight into my problem. I learn a lot just by looking through all the different forums. The people here also seem very interesting. I'm also hoping that one day I'll be good enough at designing that I help someone else.
6) Something personal. Uhm, thats a tough one. Lets see, I'm still a newlywed, is that personal? My husband and I got married on April 14th, 2001. Or howabout I hate my job, and am not very fond of Arizona (to live in, though I would LOVE visiting here if I didn't live here), and even though I've never lived in New York City, I feel like it is my home there. I have visited plenty of times, in fact, my husband is a native new yorker and he lived there when I met him while visiting NY. Its corny to say it, I know, but when I watch TV shows that take place in NYC or movies, or read books about it, or see pictures of the city, I get a pang in my stomach that can only be homesickness.

Hope you love living there, Stacy. I understand that sometimes you feel like you just belong someplace. Sometimes I feel like that when I'm in the Berkshires in MA. Going there feels like coming home, even though I was born in NYC and now live 50 miles outside of it and have never lived in Massachusetts at all. My son is your age and he's a musician and has been playing gigs in NYC. Hey, let me know when you get there. Maybe you can make a gig and we'll meet up.:)
