Do you think my PC specs are good, terrible, or OK (for the time period now), and how long do you think it'll be until it gets old? Also, which is better: NVidia or ATI?

PC Spces:

3.0 GhZ Pentium 4 Processor w/ HT Technology
1.0 GB DDR2-RAM
160 GB hard disk with SATA (except the SATA doesn't work)
DVD/CD burner at 8x
CD burner at 52x
floppy disk drive
17" CRT DELL monitor
two speakers and subwoofer
128 Mb ATI-Radeon Graphics Card
other not-as-important stuff

3gig processor? and your asking how good is it?

as far as I am concerned you have the top of the line. good for 2-3 years.

also the video card like everything else is personal prefernce. both companies put out some fine products.

Only 2 to 3 years? What would you consider a PC that would last 4 to 5 years?

not possible.

your computer is out dated the time you buy it.

sure it may last upto 10 years, but behind the times. but a normal turn around is 3-4 years.

Not bad, how much did it cost you?

Only thing I would have gotten different would have been a 256mb video card.

I've seen people who have gotten 3Ghz processors and have gotten with it 512MB or less of RAM. Too bad for them. Only looking at the gigahertz:rolleyes:

Where do you buy the parts?

Scoutt, 600$?!??!

So how much do you think I could get this machine for:
around 3 ghz processor
256mb video card
a gig of nice RAM
nice sound card
80gig hard drive

I've talked to some people I know online who build computers and they say that a chip set, motherboard, and an OK video card will cost me a little over 400

it was an arbitrary number, not an exact quote. I also said less as well. $400 sounds about right, but then again I wouldn't use intel so it would be an AMD which doesn't go to 3gig yet.

now with those, are you going top of the line or halfway?

of course things at newegg.com and pricewatch.com are going to be way cheaper but you don't always know what you are getting. but if you go top of the line on everything with an AMD,ATI I could get it it for $1024 but that is the best on everything.

You could get it for $600?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Josh

1024? That's still pretty damn good. I want to get really good so I can use it as long as possible.

I did find out that there is an outlet for tigerdirect about 15 minutes from here, so I'm going to get a list of the parts I want and buy them there.

Scoutt will tell you an ATI Radeon is better though :D

its been my experience, being pretty good with this stuff, that ATi Radeon is great. my dad has a GeForce on his computer and i got a Radeon x300 on mine... no comparason. his just sucks

ive got a 3.2Ghz P4 800Mhz FSB, works great.

512Mb RAM, gonna get a gig stick for christmas.

yes a 128Mb Ati Radeon x300 rocks for gaming. dont get me wrong, i'd love at the bare minimum a 256 x300, but i'd probably shoplift for an x800.

250Gb HDD, that thing will store the microsoft mainframe

i gotta take my modem card out... never use it. this reminds me *goes and takes it out*
