Just a little poll here. At the time of writing I know that Radiohead are top of the UK charts, and heading for the US Number 1 album spot to, but what's everyone's opinion of them?

I love Radiohead! Been to see them in concert once. I don't think they are the greatest band in the world, but they have done some really great stuff. I think they've gone downhill recently though, maybe they've had their day.
My boyfriend hates them, he says their music is too depressing and makes you feel like topping yourself!
I still they're great though.

I have a friend from Newcastle, England..... and he used to say the same thing. I had to let him know quite often that not everything good came from england!

But you must understand where we're coming from. I mean look how many classic acts are from the UK:
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
Elton John
George Michael
Queen
Sting (of The Police)
David Bowie
I mean, really how many 'classic' (bands that have or will go done in history, and are not just five minute bands like Limp Bizkit!)
The only acts I can thing of are:
Elvis,
The Eagles,
Madonna,
R.E.M (soon to be a 'classic' act)
Bon Jovi (soon to be a 'classic' act)

Let's not forget:
Aretha Franklin
James Brown
BB King
Allman Brothers
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Kiss
Garth Brooks
Van Halen
Joni Mitchell
Janis Joplin
Aerosmith
But then the UK also gave us:
Led Zeppelin
Eric Clapton
Jimi Hendrix
Black Sabbath
AC/DC
All very influential performers.
Suffice to say, music is a world wide experience.

Yes but apart from Aerosmith (who I forgot to include) the others in the list are really HUGE names nowadays.
I also forget Zeppelin, Clapton & Hendrix as well.
But you could argue that there is great musical talent on both sides of the Atlantic, but remember, the US has about 250 million people, the UK has only 60 million.

some of radiohaead's older stuff like creep and street spirit was ok but they have completely lost the plot with kid a and amnesiac...looking at thom yorke on top of the pops doing the current single pyramid song, he looked a few sandwiches short of a picnic with all that whining and moaning! i needed my sister (a *huge* fan) to translate!
i prefer manic street preachers or travis myself...

That sounds right to me. And neither does art. All rock music is rooted in forms that evolved earlier, in the US. But those forms have roots in Africa as well as in European cultures when you go back a little farther.

Just slightly above my average standard for a good band. :)
