Launching Applications from IE

Can anyone tell me how to launch a program - say "Paint" - from a web link. I just want to launch the program not open it in explorer or anything.

All I get is an attempt to Save the file - even when it is on a web server.

Any ideas anyone?

there are three particular problems with this:

1. you have to know the client's installation to be able to find the program to load.


2. this is actually a security hole - being able to run a program across an internet connection like that is fairly dangerous.


3. the only way to do it is using ActiveX - and so only platforms that support that will work.
