What is the best service that provides free web space (for intermediate or advance users)?

Well if you ask me, all 'free' web hosts have problems, and most of them are going out of business.

But I hear that httpcity.com is pretty good ;)

Yes, of course. Hmmm...

To continue...

I know most of them have flaws like banner ads, disk space, limiting factors, etc. but they are still free and many likes free stuff. Besides, most of the paying domains allow me to pay via banks, credit or the account which I don't have. Wanna guess my age?

I tried several out there but I want your opinion about the free sites. Personal recommendation, that is if you ever got a free web host at the first place.

A follow-up question on that one. Is Yahoo! We Service good? One person complains to me about it because she is new to this web-making thing and she already paid $30 for a domain hosted by Yahoo! So what do you think?

Obviously payment can be a problem for webmasters too young to have a credit card, so yes, in those cases free might just have to do.

And about Yahoo: I never trust big businesses on the net. I keep as far away from Yahoo! AOL and Microsoft as I can!

Why is that so? I mean, shouldn't big companies like Microsoft the one you really need to get in touch with?

If you've ever used a Microsoft product, you'll know what I mean, if you've ever used the AOL browser, or called the AOL help centre, you'll know what I mean, if you've ever tried Netscape 6, you'll know what I mean :D

Big businesses have lost touch with the people, and as a result of that, often produce crap products!

And that's why Big Resources (amoung many other web companies) realise how immensely important it is to stay grassroots, and in touch with what people want.

What if Big Resource becomes one of these big companies?

Oh I doubt that will ever happen! :)

It all depends on what you want to do with your site.

There is Geocities, Tripod, Angelfire and Homestead to name a few. You might ont find options like CGI, and they will put ads on your site, but if you can live with that, they might be the way to go.

I have seen alot of very nice looking small business and personal site on Geocities.

www.f2s.com is popular with advanced users but can be down quite regularly. and it is one of the few services without any banners that has been on the go a while.

a lot of the bigger hosts like www.geocities.com and www.tripod.com etc, while catering for absolute beginners, also have a fair bit to offer for those with more experience. they have been around a while so you needn't worry as much about them vanishing soon after your site is launched!

and www.httpcity.com is pretty good as well! :) i have had a site there a while now and it seems very reliable, easy to use and the banner goes at the bottom which means it is the last rather than the first thing people see. my only quibble is that there's no ftp but that's a minor concern for many.

apart from that, a good option can be webspace that comes with your isp account if you are entitled to any. it is often banner free and quite fast. if the url is not that appealing, you can fix that with a redirect or buying your own domain.

regarding paying for hosting with credit cards etc, have you thought about using that of a family member? even though i am over 18, i don't have a credit card but i just use my mum's and there is never any problems.

anyway, for even more free hosts check out www.freewebspace.net to compare hosts by advertising, features etc and read user reviews.

you can also find a large list of free hosts at http://www.123webmaster.com/Free_Services/Web_Space/
