A pixelmonkey type idea:
Sell T-Shirt transfer paper and downloads of your logo.

Cafepress may be a little high, but it also saves you from having to phsyically purchase the shirts, then have a logo put on, collect payment, ship them out.
I use cafepress, but as of yet no one wants a shirt, coffe mug or mousepad with my site logo on it (other than me, that is :D).

good for special events, colleges, and computer related functions. If you target these mass groups of computer related people, and give out tshirts as promotional items, they will increase awareness of the community. Just ask Kevin for a catchy slogan!

Too expensive to give away t-shirts - though get some made for your self and where them to fairs and places related to your web site.
You could design T-shirts and sell em cheep but then no would buy em.

Trick to this would be to have a really arresting image or design. It's harder to do stuff like this now, as people don't wear T-Shirts with graphics the way they did in the 70s.
Alternately, to have a good quality colored shirt with a smaller, tasteful logo and URL.

Theres another place that lets you order like 1 t-shirt for yourself are a few for your friends, they let you design and order online, I've use them before when I ordered some promo calendars.
Click Here (http://oceanline.clickprint.com/cp/cgi-bin/browse_class.cgi?id=395)
A cheaper way and I think more effective then shirts is having some promo post it notes or mouse pad with your website url, again you can order just 1 to 500 ( I've ordered 65 post it notes so far, its the same link as above

jason, not T shirts but I am currently pre-selling Cloth members badges (patches)
It has taken me around three years aquiring information from site users, and in my case I need several different badges. I have pre sold enough to reasure myself that I can move them over a period.
I have no idea of how a webmaster related site would fare, but badges can be delivered in a letter, small and inexpensive. ( collectable even.)
The similarities between our sites; mine is also a forum, except I am so strict that I reverted to html format, to get total control over what is posted where. (definately no chit chat on site) classic car related . .
But I imagine you would have a great start by having design experts visiting daily. (cut the design costs)
Things that appealed to me was;
After buying the badges I had 'stock at value' if I only return 50% over a two year period I have still gained.
Advertising my own product is free.
Every sale is free advertising.
Members/users think it is A fun thing to do...
Creates a greater sense of belonging.
example of a badge here.
