Discreet webpage counter

Hi there,
I want to put a very discreet webpage counter at the bottom of one of my web pages. Is it possible to have the number of visitors just show up as html?

Search Google (http://www.google.com/), Hotscripts (http://www.hotscripts.com/) and the Resource Index (http://www.resourceindex.com/) for counters - you could also use your own Perl, PHP, ASP, Python or other script, that way it would show up just the way you want it to. It requires your webhost to support the chosen server side language though.
