Hi folks... having been promoted to the lofty ranks of a mod in the Graph-eeeeeek! Design Forum...

I have decided to canvas your thoughts on re-launching the 'Layout Contest'.

At the moment I have visions of one comp a month and run like the last few had.

So let me know what you guys think, your inputs and suggestions... this will only work with your input after all.

This may seem a little quick but I want to get the first comp running by the 7th of July.

Maybe some suggestions for the first theme! Maybe we can set the themes up 3 months in advance.

So come on fire away!

Hi there Mr. Imp :P

I think a layout contest sounds great.

I could even think of reasonable prizes, but we would have to have vbulletin 3.

Which I hope gets added soon!

I'm not very creative, so i'll let some one else come up with a theme idea :)

Although I am not really a designer and more of a coder, I would like to start designing on my own so I think this would be wonderful. I'm pretty new so I don't know what's been done and if it hasn't been done, I was thinking the first theme could be one about nature. Don't know if that's even a good topic. Hope this is ok. :D

Also, in the design, would it be ok if we added like flash animation?

A good idea for the theme, close to my heart as a biologist. I'll def think it over.

hehe well i'm actually a physicist...or going to be... :D

Hi, Brent! A physicist, huh? Good for you. I know enough about physics to be dangerous, but not enough to shoot pool or figure out how much water I can put in the sink before it overflows when I put my hand in it. <sigh>

Depending on the area of physics, there's a lot you could do with a 'nature-based' idea. What does a molecule of 'air' look like? What does a molecule of 'water' look like? How much force is a dolphin generating when it pounds against the side of a shark? An elephant's trunk is like a straw. How does that work?
What are the main laws of physics and how do they apply to our world? (Or you could just pick one or two and explain them.)

Most of the stuff here is like any science. Starting out with one idea can mean that you end up with a totally different one at the end of the investigation. ;)

Yeah those are some good ideas, but I also do web page coding for a company that me and my brother are trying to start. I was actually thinking of a site that I had in my mind of doing yet I would probably need some photo-realistic talents and 3d modelling with flash animation to do it. I was sorta hoping that I might be able to make a different version of it for this contest just to see what I am able to do. Also, about that question about flash, can we use it? Thanks for the reassurance of ideas to do site designs, I haven't every thought about using physics to my advantage. One last question, how long do these competitions last? Thanks again.

Hmmm... I'm not sure about the Flash part, Brent. I'm not running the competitions, mind you, so I couldn't say for sure. Thing is, not everyone has access to Flash. I can do a small Shockwave animation, I think, but I'd be using a far older programme than Flash. It's not really a beginner's way of doing a site, you see. By limiting the skills required to make a 'good site', we open the competition up to more of our members.

The decision, ultimately, will be up to Entimp. He's our resident 'contest' expert. ;)

As for how long they last... *lol* You know, I can't remember how long the last one went for. I think there's something like 2-3 weeks open for submissions and then another week or two of judging.

I think that once we get the theme ideas in place, the time frames will become more apparent. Some topics, I think, would require a lot more effort than others.

 As for physics not being useful in web design.. I'm a bit slow on a good day, but it wasn't until I used basic hydraulics to describe CSS that I began to understand it myself.

Well flash isn't a necessity for me to use. I don't want to make the competition unfair at any means and I guess that just pure graphics will suite me just fine. Also, sorry to get off the subject but, hydralics and css, how do them two have anything in common?

*lol* Waterfalls and the different pressures exerted at different levels of the falls. 'Cascading' style sheets. The 'water' at the top is the linked reference sheet and weighs x, but the water at the bottom, the <p style="css info">, exerts more pressure on the content than that of the linked sheet.

I used to fix aircraft. My original thought was of constant-speed pumps in a closed system, a result of some brainstorming.

cool concept....but one small question about that....

if you have a stylesheet with an attribute of a 1 px border around a table and then in html the table has this code:

<table border="0">

which would be in higher rank?

oh yeah and to be on the subject this time, this waterfall could be also another theme for the contest. it could either be for a site of its own or be a part of the naturalistic theme....what do you all think? :)

The <table style="border:none;"> takes precedence. It's at the bottom of the waterfall, so to speak.

And that's an idea for a contest, yes. 'The Nature of Things', using Nature to describe how HTML or CSS functions. *lol* Oh, that could run us into some difficulties, couldn't it? Thermodynamics, relativity, string theory, aerodynamics, hydraulics, dynamics, statics, electronics, kinetics, mechanics, quantum. I'd be lost after the first sentence in most aspects of physics.

Well, it seems that you may know more facts and such about physcis than I do. I'm still learning, but more on a how to do things rather than history based because I never did like history. Also, we could do waves, light, the weird properties of water, energy somehow, or maybe an inclined plane thing. I can see now how some of the physics might be useful in producing ideas for many things. Thanks again Pegasus. :D

I'll delete this in a minute but I just want to post some graphics copy them and save them as jpg's, I can't open them as psd's:(

It has been 10 hours and you still have not deleted your attachment so I am doing it for you. This is not a file storage site, please don't do it again. Thanks - Ian
