View Full Version : Shortening my url

I have these two long urls that I want to shorten.

The first one is: http://www.themomteam.com/cgi-bin/mom.cgi?id=sh44587&action=show
I want to change it to http://sharon.the momteam.com

The second one is: http://www.mg-2000.com/cgi-bin/mg.cgi?id=1998&action=show
I want to change it to http://sharon.mg-2000.com

I'm hoping the price will be reasonable and reference to their group won't appear anywhere in the url. Also I don't want any banners or other advertising. Is this possible? Thanks.

Sharon

Hi Sharon,

Have you considered just registering a domain name? You can do it for as low as $9.95 per year for your own .com .net or .org these days.

Just found a real good registrar in a thread below this one: http://www.godaddy.com . They offer domains at $8.95 per year, and if your webhost does not support them, they will handle domain forwarding on the domain you purchase from them for just $9.95 per year.

Thanks Jason,

I'll give the registrar you suggested a try.

Jason,

I tried your suggested link and quite a few of the others suggested in the thread below but none of them would accept a period between 'sharon' and 'themomteam'.

Most registrars won't allow for insertion of spaces.

That's correct whkoh, I didn't see the dot in your URL Sharon. Is it necessary? Could you use another dash instead (domain names aren't accepting of strange characters no matter where you register them). Keep in mind though, that you want to go with a short, catchy domain name that people will remember. You can use anything that isn't already registered. Why would you just want to use something that resembles the account name you have?

Thanks Jason and whkoh for your feedback!

The following domains are available at godaddy.com:
2dreambiz.com
mombiz4u.com
momsdreamjob.com
biz4mom.com
dreambz4u.com
sharonsdreambiz.com
sharonsmomteam.com
sharon-themomteam.com
dreambizcometrue.com

Which one do you like...if any? If you have suggestions I'm open to them as well. Thanks.

Whats's wrong with just using www.themomteam.com and www.mg-2000.com? They both go to the same place as the 'long' ones.

Thanks, Ryan, the two shorter urls do take you to a similar page but I need the page with My info at the bottom.

Sharon,

Sorry, didn't look at it that closely!

Well then, you'll have to register your own URL's and forward them to those sites.

That's the simplest solution.

Thats what we decided dotcomguy, now Sharon is just trying to choose a domain name :D

mombiz4u.com and momsdreamjob.com sound the best to me from that list, momsdreamjob.com especially.

Thanks everyone for your imput. Momsdreamjob.com it is. But before you all heave a huge sigh of relief, I have yet another question! Sorry to be such a pest.

Anyway...I'm not sure how to fill out this part of the domain registration:

Domain Name:
MOMSDREAMJOB.COM
1. This domain will not be hosted anywhere. 2. I don't have a hosting provider yet. I'll park it here for free.
3. I will be using Go Daddy Software as my hosting provider for this domain (the hosting account must beset up separately).

4. I'm hosting with another ISP. I'll enter my name server information below: Name servers are assigned by your ISP
(Internet Service Provider) or Web hosting
company. Each domain name must be
associated with a minimum of two name
servers and may include up to thirteen.
Please enter valid name server host names
present in the Network Solutions registry below
(do not enter IP Addresses). To check if a
name server is valid visit: www.nsiregistry.com
and perform a name server search.
You may register your own name servers after
the domain name has been purchased.
Add Name Servers:

P. S. Is the correct answer #3 or #4, and if it is #4, what are they talking about?

In your case, it is probably #3. you seem to have an affiliate URL rather than a web host and web space, so I doubt that you are provided with name servers, and a way from your host to assign a domain to your URL. You'll have to do that through godaddy.
