So, I'm driving down the road minding my own biz, a bobtail truck pulls up next to me with a big, brightly colored graphic of some car rims on the side which was impossible to ignore. Then I see the name of the business on the truck is something like Rent-A-Rim!
I'm thinking what a stupid idea that is, renting car rims. Lame lame lame! Then a moment later I consider that usually things I consider to be stupid will probably make someone rich. But I still find it hard to believe anyone would actually rent rims! Man, dude, if you can't afford to buy the rims you certainly can't afford to rent them!! Aghh!! Get a life people!!
End of rant.

Rim-renting is actually a pretty big business here in Florida. It's not so much a lease, though.... more like rent-to-own. You can sometimes see guys outside the shop, with 2 nice rims and 2 crappy ones, and you just know they're scraping their pennies together to be able to complete the set. :P
A fool and his money, as they say...

Actually, that sounds like a good idea considering a decent custom wheel costs $600.00 per. Although that's taking renting furniture, appliances and audio/visual to an entirely new level, it's a win win situation. Rent-To-Own Rims! When you can not afford the rims you want, we can wheel & deal!
Better yet, if you can either have your customers put the title to the vehicle up for collateral or in the event they have a note on the vehicle, place a lien on the vehicle assigning you rights in the event of default. Then the dead-beats will not only still owe you your exorbinant costs but you can repo the wheels and take possesion of the vehicle. :D

Sorry, I guess you mean hub-caps? like caps that go over the hubs of wheels?
You go for fancy ones in the States?
We're just happy enough for alloy wheels over here :)

Only the keen people go for Mags here

Not hub caps, rims, wheels, the real deal. The big thing now is spinners and a set can cost thousands of dollars.

The kind of rims he's referring to don't need hub caps.

Now I'm confused.
I was thinking the same as Horum for rims. So rims are...alloys?

I'm thinking it is the actual bit that holds the tire
Blueangel

Alloys then?
It's one of those superficial things that's always bugged me. My dad was a car mechanic and always nagged me to spend as much as I could afford on the tyres and stuff everything else.

You know the bit that you screw to the axle??
I'm a little confused of what is actally ment, but I think this is rite.... Are alloys the same? I'm not sure

Yep! Alloys are just wheels that don't rust.

The "rim" is where you mount the tire. It is then bolted to the hub which is affixed to the axle.
The rims in question are not of the stock type. As Willy Duitt pointed out they are a bit on the expensive side and Yes they are alloys.
Go to any "Hot Rod" type site and you can see them.

Sorry to hear that Floridians are as stupid as Californians. Must be all the sunny weather and the proximity to water, just has an affect on some peoples the brains. :P

Actually, they are "alloy rims" in both places.

When all these fancy wheels first appeared they were made of magnesium alloy thus the nicknames Mags or Alloys.

Bassrek, I never understood that. I always think "You know, for all the money you spent pimpin' out your ride, you could have actually bought a nice car."
Baffling. :)

We still call 'em "mags" here.. some people (like the car company's) call 'em alloys, but I only knew them by Mags...
