During the American's involvment during world war two, 40% of the applicants from the american citizens were rejected due to the fact that the applicants were not heavy enough to enter the army, in the past 10-present years, 40% have been rejected because they were to fat and only 2% were rejected for being to skinny, discuss, what has happened to the united states from then until now that might explain this, and please, go beyond "well all americans are fat and stupid" or, "twinkies were invented" you guys are smart, dig deep
fast food commercialism, need i say more

lol but so many other countries have the same, brazil has even more if i do say so my self, and yet the obescity rates in brazil look like an ant in comparison to the US.. trust me.. every other comercial on TV is about mcdonalds.. shoot me now
Brazil, i didn't know they had as much fast food as America, you have to admit, the scale is probably 1:100
plus America is like 3 times as big as Brazil isn't it?

i think it would make more sense to compare populations ;)
brazil = around 175 million
US = around 300 million
at least thats what a quick google gave me

at least thats what a quick google gave me so you can see why most fast food companies would want to commerialise as much as they can in America, because they have more people to advertise to
gildash2

but if anything the fewer the people the more the statistics would be affected, if there are two people in a country and one of them eats hamburgers and the other doesnt that 50/50, more then 90 percent of the population in brazil eats mcdonalds everyday due to the vast numbers in the lower class(thats the food they can afford) so the advertisment industry does advertise just as much as it does in america
thought i would share this with you, taken from this site (http://www.empoweredparent.com/health/obesekids.shtml)
About 13 percent of children and adolescents are overweight or obese, more than double the number two decades ago. Experts blame TV, computer games, lack of safe playgrounds and other factors that encourage kids to be sedentary - plus more access to super-sized portions of high-calorie foods. notice the highlighted computer games word, scroll to the bottom of the page and what do you get
Try out the sample game located on their website. Click here.... (http://www.nutritionandkids.net/10617) just something i found

The USA has big head start on Brazil. If Brazil continues as it is, the population willprobably be as obese as the USA in the next 20 years.

The USA is a less active society than it used to be, couple that with early introduction to unhealthy eating and little excersize, and you arrive at the current conditions, lots of overweight people.
gildash2
04-12-2004, 05:46 PM
true true kevin,, but ur kinda leaving out a whole spectrum of society that may factor in on the reason why brazil has less obesity than america, maybe sports, religious belief? alot of things influence these statistics...

yea ok sorry i posted right after u posted that post, lol but yea the spoirts thing i agree with, what about religion?
if my memory serves me right aren't there religions that forbid eating fat and others tha forbid man made foods or some silly thing like that
kevin

I don't see how religion affects weight. I see that as more a cultural thing and not a religious issue.
I think I had the answer correct in my first post. Unhealthy eating and little excersize are the main reasons people are overweight. There are some hereditary contributions to being overweight too.
There is nothing mysterious going on here, people are eating too much, they are eating the wrong foods, and they are not getting enough excersize.

There may be religions with food rules, but most of the mainline denominations do not have them; religious beliefs is not a factor in America's weight problem.
Here's a list of reasons I think this is so (expanding a bit on Kevin's comments)--I'm sorry but I think this is going to get long:
1. The US produces a lot of food; it is a prosperous country.
2. The US is a prosperous country; its people by and large have enough $$ to go around and then some. This is true of the children and teens as well, much more so than was true 50 years ago. They all have spending money.
3. The US is a prosperous country; its people are into their recreation and free-time, and have the means to do so.
4. Much more so than 50 years ago, in many single-family households both parents now work, which often (I realize for some both working just covers the bills) brings in $$ for more extras, and for sure leads to dependence on fast food and prepared foods for convenience's sake.
Fast/prepared/convenience foods are not good for you; high in additives, salt, fat, flavoring.
5. As mentioned before, kids/teens have more spending money, and they often spend it on eats and candy. Candy is often used to bribe kids into good behavior.
6. The US is a prosperous country, and one of the things we spend $$ on is our televisions. We watch the advertising and are influenced by it. We eat while we watch (no exercise, near to the kitchen). Food manufacturers oblige by making more snack foods and pop flavors for us, and we oblige by buying them.
7. The self esteem movement has proliferated the idea that "you're okay the way you are, even when you're seriously overweight. Fat can be beautiful."
8. Kids have more toys inside and play outside a whole lot less. Computer games and other techno-toys have contributed significantly to this in the last few years.
9. TV and advertising have contributed to a higher acceptance of alcohol (and its calories.) Drinking is an activity, and so is getting drunk. Getting drunk is cool. The incidence of alcoholism has risen. Binge drinking at college is increasing.
"Childhood obesity is at epidemic levels
in the United States," said U.S. Surgeon
General David Satcher.
The percentage of overweight
children, aged 6 to 17 years, has
doubled in the United States since
1968.
http://www.usda.gov/cnpp/WP%20Obesity%20Article.htm
Here's another article:
The type of diabetes that afflicts
adults has risen 33% in the past decade.
The news won't surprise anyone who pays
attention to what Americans eat: Candy consumption has climbed 40% in the same
period. People eat a pound more
chocolate today than in 1990. They also
consume too much pasta, pop, pastry, fast food and alcohol.
A third of Americans are significantly
overweight. That includes the young. USA
TODAY reported Wednesday that weight
gain among college students, which used
to be known as the "freshman 15" is now the "freshman 25" thanks mostly to junk
food.

in judaism, pork is considered unclean, they can eat hamburgers. in catholicism, as far as i know they can eat what they want except during lent, which is a month of fasting. hindus believe cows are sacred, so no hamburgers for them, unless its a veggie burger.

take me for example.
i've had four sodas today, and the only semi-nutricious thing i've had all day is a chicken sandwhich (a real one, not chick fil a :P). I haven't done any exercise at all today (usually i skate for a couple hours, but today it rained)
now, im not overweight, in fact im 3 pounds underweight, however, if 20 years from now i have the same lifestyle... i will be overweight
I eat alot of junk food, however i am not overweight. I play alot of sports like mixed netball twice a week, tennis as often as i can. As until very recently, I was a pretty regular visiter to the gym. I dont think that it is too hard to lose weight, people are just lazy.

hmmm.... I just don't know about you gildash. You bring up good topics but then start inflamming the discussion with your off handed comments.
As far as I know, both Jewish and Catholics can eat meat. I know Catholics can, because I am a member of that silly religion.
At least get your facts straight before insulting people that belong to religions you find silly.

I think the problem is, as everyone has already said, that people now are lazy.
Technology has made people lazy, and therefore, fat. And the fact that things are lot cheaper now than they used to be, therefore, more accesable.
Plus that fast food is cheaper than healthy food. I want to eat more healthily, but
1) Fast food is cheaper
2) it's more accesable, and
3) alot of the time, it tastes better.
But if I exercised more than I do, I wouldn't care about my eating habbits, as I would think I would be burning off the fat, and junk I get from the junk food.
I would be curious to know about everyones opinion on wether or not the world (not just america) would get out of this slump? Or are we doomed to a fat future?

I think that since we know the problem is there, some people will work harder to stay fit, and those around them also.
But others won't care, and just get fatter. There's always been overweight people, and there always will be

I don't believe I got you all wrong. Your post is poorly worded and there is nothing to suggest you were just joking or kidding around. It looks and reads like you are being sarcastic and that you think those religions are silly.
Make it clearer if you are just making a joke or maybe think twice before posting such comments, especially if you were a little angry.
There is no need for me to calm down because I am not angry or even a little upset.
