My dad has decided to use my Photoshop 7 CD and can't remember where he put it, I don't have it installed at the moment, because I have just formatted my PC. I need a good quality graphics program to do some work quickly and don't have access to Paint Shop Pro or my Photoshop. grrrr.
Anyway.
How would you guys rate 'The Gimp' in comparison to 'Photoshop 7'?
it would depend on how well you can use either of the programs, for quality Photoshop would be the best (not knocking Gimp) but Gimp is free so you can't expect them to be compared
it just depends on how well you can use it, i know Entimp can make some awesome graphics with it

but Gimp is free so you can't expect them to be comparedAssuming you meant 'comparable', why not? Star Office is free and reputedly better than MS Office. php and MySQL are free and better than ASP and Access. Linux is free and better than Windows. There are a zillion open source programs out there that would knock your socks off - all free - and GIMP is one of them.
In the same way as you can't learn all Photoshop can do in an evening, don't expect to learn all GIMP can do in an evening either ;)

Not to start a huge debate but the above is more of an opinion than a fact ;). ASP has many benefits, especially when you combine it with other MS applications. Linux better than Windows? I'm also not too sure about this and I'm 100% sure that is not the case for regular home/office use.
I haven't tried Gimp yet but I heard a lot of good things about it. It doesn't have as many features as photoshop does so I would recommend you try to find that but if that isn't possible Gimp would be a very good alternative.

Cheers Joe...
As for Gimp not being all that... well guess what Image package was used to do the stills in Scooby Doo?
Not saying that was a great film... but the CGI was better than OK and it was Gimp'ed in post production... goes to show how good this package is!

Very interesting, I didn't know that. I will need to download Gimp one day and give a test run, I'm sure I will like it. Does Gimp have the option to save as a PSD file? If it does will it keep all of the layer information when you do that?

Yes, you can save as a PSD file.

yup! Once you figure out where everything is and how to get to what you want...it's pretty easy to operate.
