Makes sense to me. Spring doesn't officially begin until March 20th so that's like 6 weeks and 5 days anyway.

dangit, he always sees his shadow
although, here in texas, it never got really cold this winter. we had a 70 degree day not that long ago, and its fairly pleasent outside right now...

Winter, I don't mind. It's this blasted **enthusiasm** for it that irritates me. I mean, really, do we *have* to have 3 weeks of -30C/-22F temperatures? And do we really *have* to have wind chills that drop the temperatures to the -60C/-76F?

<sigh> Six weeks, huh? <huge sigh>

Six weeks, huh? Hmmm... you know, that's about the same amount of time that the kids spend whining about how bored they are during the summer school breaks. How come the winter six weeks seems to be twice the time as the summer ones?

hehe... you must not be familiar with the tradition. Though spring technically doesn't start for six more weeks, the tradition is (for fun) to predict whether we can see 'early' spring weather prior to March 20th.

Peg,

Where abouts are you? I'm out in Denver, Colorado, US. Winters here are really nice because of the lack of humidity. Its probably 40ish C this week, and this weekend, even though we received a few inches of snow, it got up to high 50's-low 60's. I love winter, especially when its snowing and noone else is driving on the roads. I suppose the skiing/ snowboarding help too! :D

Oh, I'm familiar with the tradition, just pointing out that it is a little rigged. The groundhog usually sees his shadow so he's usually right. It's a fun tradition though.

Don't forget to eat some pork sausage (aka ground hog) today. :evilsnik:

They showed the film last night on UK TV.

I do love that film - especially where he is getting so utterly distraught that he starts killing himself, only to wake up again at 6am on Feb 2nd. :P

*lol* Trust me, we don't get "winter" until about mid-January usually, but we'll have it with a vengeance for the few weeks it's here.

About the only month I *haven't* seen it snow in is July. I was in Moose Jaw on Aug. 2, 1994 (I think), and we had snow fall. I've moved north since then, and we've had snow the beginning of June. One last blizzard to tide us over until Columbus Day (Canadian Thanksgiving Day) when we had about 12 inches fall overnight, as it were.

Mind you, only one girl lost a school day because of the weather. <sigh> She missed the bus and taking public transit would still have meant a 10-minute walk into -56C/69F wind. I kept her home. Lizzy was okay. She not only caught her bus but she wasn't walking face into the wind from the stop to the high school.

Like I said, I don't mind winter. I'm just not nearly as enthusiastic about it as Mother Nature seems to be.

hehe... sounds like you have the REAL winter up there. I'm spoiled with a much less harsh winter, Colorado is for people who like the sunshine all year around (we get over 300 days a year of sunny weather). I didn't realize you were so far north. :supereek:

Bah. Worrying about the weather is like worrying about death.

I just take it all in stride cuz I know in about 7 months I'm going to be roasting my tail off wishing that it'd snow.

Putts, that depends on your perspective. Winter in Colorado means skiing/ snowboarding... so I'm not worrying, but rather wishing for more winter!

We had a helluva snowstorm last weekend, it lasted for 26 hours. Drowning in snow here now.

I didn't realize you were so far north. :supereek: *lol* Oh, this isn't "north", you know. I spent 3 weeks one February just south of the Arctic Circle in Iqaluit, NWT. I think the warmest it got was -32C/-26F, but that was during the last hour of daylight.

I didn't walk outside. I waddled. Long underwear, shirt, sweater, down vest, blue jeans, ski pants, combat uniform, wind pants, toque, balaclava, gloves, Arctic mitts, mukluks, parka and scarf. *lol* It got a bit nippy when we were refuelling the aircraft. I had a choice, dress warmly and spend most of my day outside or sit inside and listen to the crews... <sigh> Guys will be guys, what can I say. ;)

The one thing I *can* say about winters in Saskatchewan over winters in Iqaluit, though. I can usually see over Saskatchewan's snowbanks. <sigh> I wish I couldn't. We need the moisture badly. As much as I like the sun, and we get a fair bit of it, even this far north, I think I'd rather see a week's worth of rain or snow. Nothing heavy, just persistent. I don't have dusty shelves, I have sandy ones.

You know, Rob, if I could figure out a way to throw a snowball in your direction and have it arrive in the condition it was meant to.... *g*

I'm right there with you Peg. We just had a northern front blow through Houston and temps aren't expected to get up much higher than 60°F for the next several days! It's really a hassle having to put that jacket on over my short sleeve shirt every morning. :evilsnik:

Hey, now don't get me wrong.... I like snow.

...as long as it's in a cup, smothered with some kind of candy-flavored syrup. I tell ya, that's just the thing to help beat this February heat. :P

I think he got a bit confused up here. We've had both a fair bit of snow and temperatures above freezing. <shudder /> Boy, am I glad I'm not driving this winter. ;)
