the freebie version of WS-FTP is giving me fits when setting chmod to files and dir's! when i set a folder or file with lets say 755, exit the program and re-enter, it will automatically change to 700! i was thinking abey it's not changing the values at all, so... i called the file from another computer while having the ws-ftp program open and active on a domain which i had just changed to 755! everything worked! i clear the systems history one the computer and return to the other that has the program open. I close the program and sign off, return to the system with the cleared history and go to load the same page again... BOOM! its back to 700!
this problem is not related to the systems cache or history, but its puzzling, because i can call the same page on several different systems and recive the same result. do you know if there is a program (prefer free!) that allows me to change the chmod and save it with it staying?
kicking WS-FTP and calling it names

Are you sure that it is WS-FTP resetting it to 700 when you shut it down, or could it be your server has a glitch? I know next to nothing about how servers work, by the way, and only a little more about FTP. I do understand that 700 means that only you can access your files and 755 means that others can read and execute them, I think. LOL

it's not the server, because there was a big problem with several files that run my UBB having the wrong chmod, and when Jacob checked it (after i had tried setting and re-setting the files chmod) he told me they were wrong, swiched them to 755 the way they shouls have been and then everything worked great! hopefully he will visit this thread and tell me a little about the program he used to change them.
thanks for asking

Interesting problem....I have used WS-FTP LE for many years without any real problems.
I don't think your problem has anything to do with Adobe Framemaker, unless you are using framemaker files.
Sounds like your install of WS-FTP is hosed, I would do an uninstall and reinstall the latest version. Save the WS_FTP.ini file first so you don't loose your current settings. After reinstalling WS-FTP place the WS_FTP.ini file back into the appropriate folder (C:\\PROGRAMS\WS_FTP) if you use the default install path).

If you are determined not to use WS-FTP LE, do a search on http://www.tucows.com for FTP programs for your operating system. There is no magic in the program though, they all do the same thing, they send a CHMOD command to the server...

No, I didn't post that because it's for framemaker. I posted it because of the unmask command for unix. That isn't particular to framemaker alone, I found other links for linux, and a bunch of other stuff I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT! LOL But I bet he has unmask overriding his chmod command.

OH...maybe he does...you never know what a monkey will get into.
But if Jacob could set the permissions I'm not sure. Maybe Chris is using an intialization string when he logs into the server with WS-FTP, he should check in the STARTUP tab in the session properties window for the particualr site that is causing him problems and see if there is an intilization string. Normally there shouldn't be one. But with a monkey, what is normal?
Who knows....

curiousity began to get to me last night, so i tried somehting. while on one of my accounts (same server, different domain) i tried the same sequence as mentioned in an earlier post. The same effect of the files returning to the WRONG Chmod. So the next time i kept the program open, and simply unpluged the phone line, reconnected without viewing the setting with the WSFTP and everything worked! the chmod's stayed the way they were supposed to and when i viewed them again with WSFTP they displayed properly!
something is causing a quirk when i exit the program... i should be able to find it now!

Kevin, you have NO idea how many times i have asked that same question about "normal" to myself...i'm still searching for an answer!
