What is going on with the search engines. Is it still possible to submit a commercial site (with or with out actual ecomeerce) for free to the major engines anymore? Some of them don't seem to have a free listing anymore. They want $99 or $199 what's up?

Hey K,
Just about all of the search engines have a free method of listing sites, some are just harder to get to than others. Which ones in particular are you having troubles with, maybe I can point you in the right direction.

OK, I did some digging around and found the area to submit a URL on the engines I was wondering about. However, I wonder if it will do any good if you don't use the paid submission. Anybody know about this?

a little OT, but what about the internal search services? with almost 10,000 pages and not the greateest menu system, when talking with "Ask Jeeves" of ask.com it was going to set us back around $125,000. Others ranged in price from $2000 + and an adverage around $35,000. After pricing like that it makes me think im in the wrong area or the web!

You linked to search.mamma.com!!! Which is a little bit different than making the search engine! ha! And WE KNOW YOU LIKE GOLDI, ok!! lol!
Kman,
I submitted my sites the old fashioned way (free)... by going to each search engine and entering the info... one by one. I seem to do ok on name based searches. I guess it all depends on your focus. If you have a site on auto racing, keep in mind your competition. They may have been around a lot longer, and may be linked to by to a lot of sites. This might help their rating.
I think it also depends on if your an e-commerce site or if you depend on high rankings for revenue. It might be worth the while to pay some $$$ for good ratings if it will improve your exposure. Personally, I don't need mass publicity, or many hits..... so I did it the old fashioned way. When I type something close to my website name I am in the top 3 on most engines.
I am also of the mind to make friends of your competition. Get to know them and their products. If they are a good company with quality going out the door, ask to trade links. If they don't have what the customer wants, maybe you do-and vice versa. Besides, even if people see your link but don't click... they still saw it. And the more times surfers see it, the better chance for them to visit the site.

I hope you understand this misfit of society!
Do you know a way to make a search engine that really works and gives good results without any help from outside, without linking to another searchengines site. Where should i get all the results from? You understand what mean? And this engine should only be a colorful gag. And it does function really good with my logo dispayed on every page. Just test it...(hihi)
however: Thanks a lot for your comment!

Hire a team of PHDs to do the programming. Google.com had as many as 20 PHDs working on the programming/algorithims that the search engine uses. That and the $25,000,000 in venture capital helped!
Seach engines ain't cheap!!

Hmmmm.......I'm listed in Netscape and didn't pay a thing. I didn't even submit to them. I thought they used DMOZ.
I submitted in a couple of different categories in Google, and thanks to DMOZ am listed in AOL, Netscape, Metacrawler without even submitting to them. I even get a few hits from Ask Jeeves and Looksmart and Northern Lights, so they all must use some form of DMOZ.

As Steve mentioned, dmoz.org is a great place,(and free too,) they seem to generate as many hits for me as any other search engine.
