I am planning to implement a web site for a business that weould require on-line payments being authorised. I have searched the forum for relavent threads. I wondered if anybody felt like giving me some advice.

depends on what method of payment you are thinking about, by far the easiest is a third party processor, for example paypal, with their setup you need not worry about site security, they generate secure pages for you to link to, on which your customer pays for the product.
The ohte end is merchant accounts and merchant services with which you require ssl, have a look at verisign's (http://www.verisign.com/products/payflow/commerceSite/index.html) commerce packages, these options are not cheap but it depends on your sales load.
