I'm fairly new at this and have just submitted to a couple of search engines so far. Found out I got listed on Alta Vista but not sure of my ranking. Is there an easy way to check this? (I'm probalby 2,000,000,000...)

Thanks for your help :)

I am not sure how you can actually find your site, but keep in mind a lot of search engines rank sites by how many hits they have per day, week, month, ect. If I were you I wouldn't have submitted to the search engine just yet. Wait til you build up a steady flow of traffic.

Thanks for your info. I did an advance search. With my key words and only sites listed in the last month. Came up around 125 out of 159. Definately need to work on this. Thanks again.

Be choosy about which keywords you want a high ranking on, and stick with those. Try to think of the words that will be searched for most often, and relate to your site. If you are trying to get a high ranking for a dozen different keywords, you will have a tough time.

Also, AltaVista decides your fate on a complex formula, which doesn't include your site's traffic, but instead the number of links to your site (and AltaVista only knows about the link you your site if it has that site indexed as well). You can find out how many sites AltaVista has indexed with links to your site by typing link:http://www.site.com

use a small free onlinetool like:
http://siteowner.bcentral.com/pafree.cfm

or get a good proggi like AgentWebRanking!
want it for free?
than search for "serials2000"
(best tip you got for the next 100 years!)

if you only want to check if your site is in the index:
try this command:
url:www.YourPage.com
is tehre somebody who links to you?
find it out with:
link:www.YourPage.com
