Okie dokey a gimp question... is this a first?
Sounds good.
Create your pattern image, or select the section you want from a larger image and crop it so you just have the area to be patterned.
Save this file with *.pat extension. Probably best to do this straight to the gimp/patterns directory.
You will then get options to give it a discrete/short description.
If it isnt in the patterns directory in the root of gimp, move it there now.
You should find it ready to use from the pattern palette/window.
Simple eh!

I haven't seen too many Gimp question on here. I finally decided to put my box under debian linux again. I keep switching back and forth with XP.
Anywho... thank you sooooooo much. It worked. Now I just have to figure out how to fill my selected area with it! :D
