Greetings all,
I'm building a website that is service based. There are no products, so I don't need any inventory management, or a shopping cart, per say. And I don't really want to purchase an external merchant, like Miva, or whatever. What steps do I need to take in order to accept and bill credit cards numbers? Obviously I'll need SSL, but what else? And what steps do I take? Clearly I don't know that much about this, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

by far the simplest way is to use services such as paypal, setup a product/service profile with what the particular service/product costs, all it's details, recurring payment if necessary and then it will generate a seure page for you to link to from that particular service/product, and ofcourse you would setup a different product/service page for each service you have, with their respective prices.

many other 3rd party credit processors out there
mypaysystems (https://cardholder.paysystems.com/faq.pay?action=0)
http://www.2checkout.com/

see this (http://www.3rdpartyprocessors.com/third-party-processors5.shtml) page for a few more and what they charge.
by the way, with these you will not need to purchase a ssl

There are lots of options. You should research virtual terminals and payment gateways for your website, and if you want to take cc's over the phone..you can get yourself a merchant account through a payment processor (http://helpmerchants.com).
