Hi All,

I'm the webmaster for http://www.freaksforum.com/ . I was wondering what is the best way to improve our rankings so that we are in the top 10? We are listed on dmoz.org, but everytime I enter in one of the keywords that our site has, our site never comes up in the top 10 or even the top 20. If anyone can help me I'd really appreciate it. Thanks :).

Advanced Search Engine Optimising
The importance of adding keywords to the title, text and meta-tags on a page. Here are some more techniques you can try.

A boost to your keywords will be given if they appear as link text, like this:

<a href="www.e-forms.8m.com">keywords here</a>

Also the links pointing to your site are important and links from related sites count for more than links from random sites.

Put keywords in ALT tags, search engines can't read images. ALTs don't alter the look of a page which is good and are useful anyway when images don't load.

Example:

<img src="/images/eforms.gif" border="0" alt="keywords here">

Other things that may help are using comment tags:

< !-- keywords here >

Heading tags:

<h4> keywords here </h4>

and using synonyms of your keywords helps to build a theme of the page.

You'll not want to overload you page with keywords however. More about what to avoid next time.

Another place to find basics about search engines:

I hope these above techinques will help you.

Also keep in mind, you can't expect to be listed in the top 10 in the blink of an eye. A lot of search engines list by how many hits you have per day/week/month. The more popular your site gets the higher it will be listed. Good luck!

I've heard that if you have words about your site on the page. It helps. For example, your site is about camping. Some keywords are: camping, bushwalking and tent

So put it in the body of your page like this:

<BODY>
You'll learn a lot from our site. It is of course about CAMPING. I personally love BUSHWALKING. By the way, go to the tent section and learn how to pitch a TENT in minutes!
</BODY>

Well thats a pretty lame example, I know. But it helps explain what I am talking about. Oh by the way, don't put the keywords in capitals, I put them in capitals to show where the keywords were.

I see many sites just put a whole load of words at the bottom of the page. Don't do this! It is quite annoying for your visitors.

also, while search engines will list you....they are generally not the most effective means of getting surfers to your site, unless you have a target niche which few people have exploited so far. Don't rely on search engines, use any means you can for advertising your site. Trade links with other sites, buisiness cards, invite traffic from places you visit...like include your URL everywhere you go, and all the places you sign a forum/ guestbook. You'd be suprised at the effectiveness of good old "word of mouth, too."
