View Full Version : shutdown screen
anybody know the name and location of the image file of the shutdown screen?
Hi, these are located in the windows directory, they are called "Logow.sys" (windows is closing down), and "Logos.sys"(it is now safe to turn off your computer). These are actually images in .bmp format which are 320px wide by 400px high and reduced to 256 colors. You can create your own images, size them to 320x400 in 256 colors, save them in .bmp (bitmap) format and then rename them to Logow.sys etc and place them in the windows directory. It may pay to back up your original ones first before overwriting or replacing them.
I hope this answers your query.
good luck

I changed my windows start/shutdown screens about 2 years ago, it was kinda fun, you get an image of my smiling face when windows is booting and an image of it frowning during shutdown. I had a problem where with the initial image I made the file size was not the same as the original and W95 would not display it because of that descrepancy. I also lost the scrolling staus bar at the bottom of the W95 boot up screen when I replaced it with my image, don't know if that was my fault or not but It didn't really matter to me.
I also added an image of my computer in the system properties window (the manufactured and supported by area) just for laughs, but I did it so long ago I don't remember how I did it anymore!

I can't seem to edit my posts anymore???
I think with W98 and later you can edit a system file that will display a different screen at start and shutdown, you don't need to name the new image the same as the original start/shutdown images, just point the correct system file to the new images you wish to use. Maybe someone knows for sure...
