i'm looking for an amazing editor. one that does syntax highlighting for php and html. optionally it would also be nice if it could save over ftp to a remote location. and that's it. oh it also has to be free. is that too much to ask?
now there is the possibility that such a program doesn't exist, or at least not a quality product. perhaps i'd write one myself...

free huh?! Try a trial version of allaire homesite, http://www.allaire.com/ which will meet your needs. There probably are free versions of OK software...but why not just download WS_FTP and use whatever editor you fancy? WS_FTP is easy to set up and use, takes maybe...five minutes to install and learn to use.

i currently use notepad and cuteftp. however, i'm just looking for a simple editor that does syntax highlighting. the ftp was simply something that would be nice.

Normally, the most expensive would be the best: Marcomedia Dreamweaver and Adobe GoLive!
However, if not all the features are needed and HotmetalPro or Hotdog would do nicely.

I believe notetab does some highlighting, not sure about PHP though. Download.com has a ton of notepad knock offs, I've seen a few of those do syntax highlighting. However I think Homesite might be one of the better paid programs on the market.

Firstpage 2000 is free at http://www.evrsoft.com and there is an integrated FTP module you can also download for free. Does basic color coding of html and scripts. Not sure if it actually supports PHP syntax but you can try it.
