Link exchange??

I am just looking for some advice from people who have some experience with this. Just research. My site is not near complete enough yet, but when the time comes how do I go about approaching people to include my little logo/link? Is payment almost always expected? Is it common to exchange links with sites for free?

Any tips will be appreciated.

What is your site about, ANIME sites always exchange for free if you meet their requirements. WEBMASTER and WEB DESIGN sites usually exchange for free.

It is geared toward Windows XP. Tweaking for performance, security, and customization, and a forum for discussions. I realize this is a common subject, but it's what I know and gives me the practice I need at writing code:D

You can see the beginnings here --xptweaks.org-- (http://www.xptweaks.org). I now have an experienced graphic artist working on a more attractive logo and interface so it will change quite a bit over the next few days. I have the PHP forum installed, but the content isnt ready yet so it's not linked to the site.

Most sites will exchange for free if they think that your site is good and will have information for their own visitors.

Get listed in the correct category in http://dmoz.org and also www.goguides.org these are free links and both directories get crawled by search engines daily.

Get good at writing emails for the link exchange, if it is just a mass email sent to 100 people in one go it wont have the same effect as a personal email. Show that you have done some research about their site, even put their link up before you email (you can always take it down if they dont reply).

I keep a spreadsheet of people that I have emailed, then its easy to keep track of how things are going, and easier when you can see how your link campaign is going.

Thanx for the ideas creative. I hadn't heard of those sites before, but it sounds good. Soon as I get a little further on I will submit there. Most of my reading shows that outside links to your site are one of the most important ways to getting a decent rank in search engines, so...
