Rob. Here are the instructions for you.
Don't get upset if I explain it to you like
you were a dummy. The fact that people ask
for help makes them smarter in the long run.
Here goes.
Get the CD, anyone will do, but it must be
from Internet Explorer 4. America Online
gives them away free.
Put the CD in, (when you see this / it means
left click, // means either double click or
right click.] / my computer, / D:\ or what
ever drive you use for your cdrom, then
choose explore. You should now have two
panes in front of you. In the left pane, /
MSIE 401 sp1a [D:\] then / 1386, then / EN,
then / download, then / Ie40. You should now
have in your right pane, six or seven rows
of little vice's. These are .Cab files.
Now, if you don't have WInZip, go to www.winzip.com (http://www.winzip.com) and download it because you
are going to use it to open these files.
Once you have WinZip installed, look at the
vices closely, and you'll see one that says
FPESETUP. // on it. then when WinZip pops up
choose open.
Now you should get a screen that says I agree
/ it, and then in the next popup, / next.
Now it will ask you if you want to add the
folder D:\1386\EN\IE40 to your favorite zip
folders. I choose no because I might want to
install an application in a different folder.
IMPORTANT. Remember where you unzip this
folder to so you can find it. I made a
folder called Unzipped so I could easily
locate my downloads. Anyway, now you should
have on your screen a panel that has five
buttons along the bottom of it. At the top
it says, WinZip Classic is required for this
Archive. Go ahead and / WinZip Classic at the
bottom left of the panel. Now you will see
a new panel that says WinZip-FPESETUP.CAB.
This is your Front Page Express Application.
In this panel you will see several files.
The top eight are the only ones you need.
They are:
1. Fpxpress
2. Fpxpress [with a yellow ? on it.]
3. lead52n.dll [.dll are drivers.]
4. Fpxpress [with a feather on it.]
5. fp20tl.dll
6. fp20ime.dll
7. fp20htp.dll
8. fp20utl.dll
They should be in that order, but it doesn't
matter. But you must have all eight!
Now you can close all the windows except for
the one with the files in it [DUH!!]
Go ahead and / My Computer, choose C:\
and all your files in C:\ will appear as if
by magic! Scroll all the way to the right,
exposing some clear space at the end of your
files. // click on any open area, and choose
new folder from the pop-up. You can name this
folder anything you want, but make it some-
thing easy to remember. Now move the panel
with the list of files, and your new folder
side by side. [It's easier to work with them.
Now be very patient. You are going to end the mystery of those mysterious .Cab files.
once and for all.
Now that you have the panel with "THE LIST"
and your new folder open and close to each
other, place your mouse pointer on the first
file, hold down the left mouse button, and
"drag" the file over to your new folder, and
release it. Be very patient, because strange
things are going on behind the scene. In
about 20 to 45 seconds, you will see the
first file appear in your new folder. After all activity stops, move to the next file
and repeat the same command for all eight
files. Congratulations!! You have done some-
thing only about two out of ten users can do.
Once you have all eight files in your new
folder, go ahead and close all the windows
except for your new folder.
Now, see the little tablet with the feather
on it? Either double click it or use the
right mouse button. You will now be magically
transported to FRONT PAGE EXPRESS.
Famliarize your self with it. It really is
pretty easy to make web pages with. Do not
be afraid to experiment, especially with
different backgrounds and txt colors.
When you are ready, post a message again,
and I'll tell you how to transfer it to
an html document and upload it. Good Luck,
and if you run into any problems, post me a
note. Mike.
