I'd like to learn as much as possible to do with E-commerce.

If you'd be kind enough to provide links to third party sites with pdf documents on getting started?

If you wouldn't mind prividing your recommendations on the best software for creating a shop on a "for now" host on a virtual server so I can publish to my C: drive with all supported scripts (CGI, ASP SQL).

I'd like to process orders but also verify card details so I need information on how to do that.

Thank you for your help,
Lancaster.

both http://www.2checkout.com and http:/www.paypal.com both have have "internal carts" where you can add products for cut and paste code if you are just learning and need to sell products right away. Additionaly, both systems provide information on php and cgi carts as well if you are looking for a real content system. Paypal is even free to sign up with so you can have a look, however 2checkout costs about $50 to open an account. Both systems will also allow you to accept payments directly from the web.
