Pop up windows

I cant get my popup to work. I want one to appear when people access my page but i want a picture to some up in that window bit text. and a pop up not an alert box, im stuck here, anyone??

alert boxes don't allow for a lot of change.

I,personally, would use a div with a high z-index (brings it all the way forward on the screen) that would look somewhat like an alert box. Then you can insert anything into it that you could put in any html page (images, links, etc.)
