I had two links pages because one filled up in notepad and recently someone e-mailed me and said that my 2nd links page had a ranking of zero on google. I then went and made a new page with all the link on one page, then checked each and every link for any with rankings of zero, because this person told me my own page could be banned from google if I linked to other pages that ranked zero. So, not wanting to take any chances, I took off all of those that ranked at zero and placed them on the second links page because I did agree to exchange links with these sites and didn't want to renig, or lose my link on their sites! Okay, my question is, will it hurt my whole site to have a page where all the sites ranking at zero are placed? Can I be penalized for that? Anyone know? thanks!

Google looks at each page seperatley from each one. If your page was penalised it wouldnt effect the rest of your site.

IF you link to a page that doesnt rank on google it doesnt mean that it is a bad thing. There are many reasons why!!

I will reply to this thread again later, I am off to bed its late, but I will post again in more detail :D

Thanks, Creative - I already feel relieved to know keeping that 2nd links page up won't hurt me. This person I did a link exchange with asked me if I'd mind putting his link on the first links page because the 2nd one had a PR of zero and then he said that could get his site/page penalized, as well.

Now I made it alphabetical and I get a request from a "W" listing to put it on a page I don't put links because it was too far down. (Said no because I can't start showing preferential treatment or everyone will expect it - right? )

Google wouldnt ban you from their index if you linked to a page that has a zero PageRank, its not a good idea to though as it will not help your PageRank in any way.

As mentioned before keep all outbound links on topic to your site, and try and only link to sites that are going to of use to your visitors and also have a PR of 5 or more!

One site that I look after had an increase in PR because of two links that I added to it, went from a PR4 to a PR5 and that was on the home page :D

Try to keep the links as text links if possible, a text link for this forum would be HTML FORUMS the text link will act as a keyword for the site that you are linking to.

Gotcha - and thanks! Now, one more question (sorry). For the actual ranking, when you place your cursor over the Page Rank, there is the little message you get with two numbers at the end - for example, this site had 6/10 at the end - is that the ranking number? I assumed so, but learned it's not a good idea to assume so I just wanted to check to be sure.

Gosh, wish I was in your category!! :D

I usualy check my PR with the google tool bar, its got no spyware in it, its quick and easy to use as well. Its got loads of good features :D

6/10 would be your PageRank. If you are in the ODP directory you will be listed in the Google directory as well, if you find your site in the directory that is a more accurate reading of your real PR. The toolbar isnt always on point with the PR.

I hear all that!! :D I tried Alta Vistas bar and sure enough - Spyware all over the place. Wasn't too happy about that, plus it's just users of their toolbar that create rankings, so I removed it.

Overall google's is a good reference to get a general idea, isn't it?

The ODP directory - what is that?

Google at present has the largest index of web pages available on the Internet for a sarch engine. If you have a look through their site and delve in a little deeper you get a feel for what they are about.

Try this URL:

http://labs.google.com

The ODP stands for the Open Directory Project, they run the largest human edited directory on the web. When you submit to them and you get excepted into their directory you will also be placed in Google's directory, there are many other SE's that use the data from the ODP. Their site is:
