I'm about to do a format and I'm doubting what OS to install. I'm working very well in 2000, have no problems at all, but still i'm interested in xp. Is it better? Reliable?
Take the poll!
Depends on what you want. If you will be using it for office applications and maybe a web server than go with 2000 as it is more stable for programs like that. If you will use it for personal (games, etc) and office business go with XP. A lot of people say that XP is crap but I think those people just don't like Microsoft, I haven't had many problems with XP and it's more stable than 95, 98, or ME. There are some problems when it comes to games but I think that's becuase I installed XP without fomrmating.

I'm going to go the opposite way on this I say win 98 se. This is because i find that xp and me are full of bugs or just dodgey. I thought xp was alright for a while... untill i discovered lots of games don't work.

I have my 800MHz AMD athlon running Win 98se, and it seems faster than my 1.4 athlon on XP Home. LoL

XP is just an upgraded 2000 which is upgraded NT. Go with XP.
Those who can't work their games, etc need to look at the emulation features in XP.
I find it funny people blaming the OS for their failings. MS may have plenty to be blamed for, but there are surprisingly few faults with XP.

Dual boot XP & 2000, takes a little more work then other combinations but it can be done.

I'm running 2000 for work purposes (web and database servers) with little to no problems.
Running win2000 at home, no problems. Its kind of like the photoshop6 (upgrade to 7??) question. I mean, you really need to take a look at whether xp will offer you anything you need. Don't buy into the 'if its new, it MUST be better for me, cooler, I NEED IT!' philosophy.
Take a look at what you have, take a look at whats available, and take a look at your goals. I'll bet that you don't even NEED xp to continue doing everything you are doing. All you'll get is a different looking OS, with a lot of new features, 5-25% of which you'll actually use.
I would not upgrade to XP if you have 2000 but I would if you have ME or 98. I had a lot of problems with ME and XP seems a lot more stable. XP also seems faster than 98 and has a few new features. If you are into games stay with 98, if you aren't then upgrade.
Good Luck,

im a complete pro-MS person myself .... but NEVER get winME .... i suggest win98SE, win2k, or winXP pro myself ... i plan on doing a dual boot with win98SE and win2k myself .... i have winXP home on a computer right now, but refuse to install SP1 as im not too sure on upgrading because of all the issues ...
so my suggestion: if you have winXP with SP1 on CD, go for winXP ... if its just winXP, then go win2k ....
i think both are just as stable .... i like the win2k interface a little better though, but thats just me ....

I love XP but am going back to 2000. Recently purchased a new PC and had XP installed against my wish as I wanted 2000. Said try it out and I did. I soon grew to like this, even it's play-school feel and look. I do have some problems with it though. I am not sure how safe it is as for spying on my system and giving info back to MS. Also it won't let you use a netmeeting with non XP users... work that one out!!! I am not sure if this has changed, but you can only change so many hardware componnents before you have to buy a new XP agreement. MS says this is because you have a new PC after so many add ons... work that one out too! But why I am going to change! The cowboy shoddy asses that built the thing installed a dodgy version of XP without a valid CD key. So now I want to install service pack 1 and I can't... not going to pay for XP again and they won't change it. So looks like I am going to reload an old version of 2000 I used to have.
XP is great but ask yourself do you really need it.

well, you could get ways around it ...
but still, whoever built it for ya, id go after the ****er ..... hell id report it to the authorities, MS, etc etc ....
and you dont have to rebuy XP if you do so many addons, you just have to re-register it, thats all

I personally recommends Windows XP, If you are using it for networking purpose, It Faster, stable than other versions of windows, I tested it on a network of 200 Computers with internet access, also installed entertain softwares like (games, videos, music etc) it work fine, smooth and faster.
The best think I like about Windows XP, is that Internet access is way fast then other old OS.
For Games purpose: Now All the latest games compatible with Windows XP, For old classic games U can also install (win 98 se) with it!
Thanks,

I'm not very familiar with Win2K, but I've been using XP for over a year, and I love it.
I used to dual boot with XP and Win98SE, but now I dual boot with XP and Linux (I tried several distros, including Vector 3, LindowsOS and Mandrake 9.0... next I'll be trying Red Hat 8.0 and Ark Linux).
I'm running XP Pro SP1 on an Athlon 1200MHz w/ 256MB RAM with terrific performance. Rock-solid stability, too. Best OS I've tried so far. Doesn't run some of my older games, though.
