View Full Version : Search Engine file extension reference
Hello:
I did something dumb a few days ago, need advice
A few days ago I changed all my file extensions on my site to asp. Now i am getting a lot of errors as search engines are still referencing my old htm files. Is their anything I can do about this ?
Or am I stuck with waiting until site references get updated.
Any advice appreciated.
Dave
Hi Dave,
This is a common problem for anyone who changes sites, page names, directories etc. One solution you may have to do is make up some htm files of the same name and use a redirect script on them to the corresponding .asp pages until these sites have updated your links.
Also make sure you resubmit your site with the updated url to all the search engines you can, and email any linking sites to notify them of the url change. These are not pleasent tasks and can be very time consuming, but are essential if you want to keep your traffic. Unfortunitly you will probably loose some traffic for the first few months, as that is how long it takes for some search engines to list your site. Best of luck, I know what it is like to do.

Just an extra thought, are you on your own domain? if you have your own 404 page, you can edit it and redirect users to your index page, at least they will still be on your site until your url is updated.

Thank you for the feedback Ian. I do have my own URL at http://www.energyshack.com
I am fairly new at web site construction and was not familiar with custom
404 error pages. Fortunately I am able to process through my site manager, with my existing hosting account. I would like to say that I have visited your site often (usually when I have encountered problems) and have always been able to find an answer, and get good and accurate feedback.
Many Thanks
Dave
