how does search ranking work?

I seem to always suffer the fate that we all do,....poor search engine ranking! Could someone please explainto me how the ranking works. As in why does company x apear on page 1 and company b who has the same meta tag, apear on page 100. I always seem to apear on page 100 regardless of what I do or spend?

Well, ranking high is like finding the Holy Grail...only there is a different Holy Grail for each search engine. With a little luck and a little work, anyone can gain those first page results.

Popularity of your site is the main key for most engines nowadays. And then you might say, "Well, how does my site get popular without getting high results in search engines for my site to be found". This is the most time consuming effort for webmasters. Most will pay someone to take that off of their back so that they can maintain their site with fresh content, etc. But most webmasters are ordinary people like me and you that just don't have the money to spend. So we spend countless hours trying new things...redesigning the site, etc.

The way to get your site to be labeled as a popular site by the search engines is to get as many (content related) sites to link to your site. Although any link from any web site will help, content related sites linking to your site will help significantly. I don't just mean, "well, i have 10 sites linking to me". We are talking hundreds of sites.

Also, i have found that the more links out of your site to other sites sometimes helps because that would label your site as being a resource type site that will send visitors to related sites.

The main thing is to keep fresh content, keep trying to get your site linked on as many search engines as possible, get as many other content related sites to link you on their links page or anywhere else for that matter, keep good meta tags with no spamming techniques... and the main thing "BE PATIENT"

In due time you site will rise without you even doing anything sometimes...lol
