Here is an excellent freeware image editor.
http://stud1.tuwien.ac.at/~e9227474/english.htm

go to the downloads section and download the exe version (no unzipping required). This program is not a paint program like Paint Shop Pro that contactbill has recommended that you try (a great program BTW), but will edit existing images. It downloads super fast because it is a small file.

Save the JPG image in TIF (TIFF) format first. Then experiment with the JPG compression by resaving the TIF image. Do not resave the JPG image more than once if possible. The image quality starts to get progressivly worse with each save. And if you resave the same JPG file too many times, the file size may actually start to increase.

Open the image in IrfanView and click on FILE>>SAVE AS then select JPG format and set the compression by clicking the OPTIONS button (thats what reduces the file size).
Start with 90% and work down at 10% increments until you no longer like the results. JPG compression reults vary depending on the colors of the image and the composition. Some images can compress down to almost nothing with little quality difference, while others will start to look splotchy or blurry with only a little compression.

Regards,
Kevin

you could also try using an online image optimiser like the ones at http://www.spinwave.com . They have good gif and jpg crunchers that you can use online for free, or purchase your own copy.

this is a link to zd-nets netmechanic..it will check your pages, download time, etc....and allow you to compress your images online, without any software!!

You could create a thumbnail, or put it into an archive like ZIP, RAR etc, or you could make its resolution smaller.

Thereīs an image-editor called "photo-impact". Itīs got a
feature called "smart-saver" for jpg and gif. I donīt know
how ist does it, but it really saves "smart". Itīs the best
one I know of.
