Free softwares to download for creating background of web page?

I am a beginner to develop web pages and want to create my home page with my own background image to make it distinct from others. Grateful for any suggestions of softwares which are free to download.

The best thing to do is go to Download.com or tucows.com and do a search for graphics or image editing programs. there are several shareware programs that ease the creation of background images.

Sausage software also makes one i forget what its called. the url is http://www.sausage.com
