programs like autohits.dk are useless, hits are all fake. no one is actually looking at the sites while they auto rotate, most have it minimized like everyone else. unless you need to make the stats look better than they are, i would reccommend to stay away from them.

I have to agree, this is just junk traffic and simply a waste of bandwidth. Out of those 400 hits a day you will be lucky if one actually looks at your site. Plus you might be violating rules if you are with an ad network as they don't allow auto refreshing sites.

The only way for a site to grow is to follow a few simle steps:

Links:
Exchange links with sites that are on the same topic as yourself, try to get sites that rank high in the search engines as well as this will look good if a search engine spider follows a link to your site.

Advertise
If your serious about your site, then advertise offline as well as online. Letter headed note paper, even business cards - looks good and spreads your URL around.

Search Engine Optimisation
Make your main keywords highly visable, get it in the URL, title of the page, once in bold, once in H1 and have a good amount of text on the page with the keyword mentioned a few times.

Put deep links to content with in your site, the spider will follow and list content from deep with in your site instead of just the home page. Cross link pages, if you have a page on the history of the Internet and you have another page on the history of the Web then link the two together. This will make sure that spider goes on to other good content pages on the Internet.
