What can i do to put game hacks on my site and not get in trouble for it(there is a high likely hood that i would get caught). These are not hacks that cause loss of money to the company but hacks that offer things like invincibility or charcter editors.

hmmm.. these sound more like mod's.
You could just email (or write to) the company who owns the game and ask if it is okay to distribute these mod's. If they say okay, then you are covered - keep a copy of their reply in case they change their mind. If they say no - don't host them on your site.
Basically, it is all down to whether the owner of a game allows mod's to be added to that game - look at all the half-life mod's.

Unfortuntally they will just say know cause they've taken on all out war against mod's etc but i did see a site that had them and said that it was ok with some legal mumbo jumbo about downloading i think it was http://www.mod69.cjb.net (i'm talking about the game Diablo II:lod)

I repeat, if they say no then you can't host.
There is this thing called copyright. The owner of the copyright is allowed to protect his interests as he sees fit. If he wants to allow his property to be modified - then that is his choice. If you go against this choice, then you are liable for court actions and remuneration (you pay him money).

theft is theft - doesn't matter how old you are. but if you are under 18, then your parents are liable too.

hmm that's not good... if i were to put a message on my site for the makers of the game, saying something about removing any things that conflict with their legal issues... do u think they would ignore it and do some court order. or just send me an e-mail telling me what to remove.

hehehe.... can't you see how uncomfortable you are with this whole thing? Listen to the little voice in your head that is telling you to forget it. If you are looking for permission or validation or even just rationalization for posting something you know is illegal, here it is:
your website will probaly never even get noticed.**
probably nothing will ever come of it.**
probably nothing bad will happen to you.**
there now, do you feel any better? Didn't think so. Which speaks good of you. :)
I don't mind advocating doing something illegal if there is a good reason or cause behind it, like posting MP3s of music to share with others, but this is such a non-issue you should just not do it. Its clear by your posts you know you should not do it, why violate your own personal standards? Unless I have just totally misunderstood you....
** not legal advice, just opinion.

Okay - you seem like you really want to do this. I can tell you this, but I am not acting as legal counsel, just letting you know what will happen:
If you put a message on your site like you suggest, you are pretty much admitting that you know what you are doing is wrong.
When they do come for you, they won't be bringing the door down to drag you away. You will be sent a request to desist in you activities. They may require a small fine to be paid, too. If you refuse to pay and/or stop, they will then send a court summons. Oh, and if you stop and then start again at a later date, this will cause you as much trouble.
At the end of the day, you know it is illegal. While you may not agree with the decision of the company, you must abide by it or suffer the consequences.
Why not just ask? If they say no, you have lost nothing. If they say yes, then you can.
PS If you want to share amongst a few friends, just use floppy/CD. Harder to track down.

on a side note, if we took away the color orange (a combination of red and yellow) the world WOULD look very different.....

It has taken two months before I got a reaction to that signature.
Time to think of a new one

I remember playing the first Diablo and the only mods or hacks were for cheating. That is why they do not want them hosted on sites, they promote unfair play that ruins the fun for others. The mods I remember would give you all the health, armour, weapons, money, etc. that you would ever need.

why don't they have a cheat guard like half-life/counter-strike?
This allows valid mods, like the great Day of Defeat mod - I have further modded this using the high definition skins which where not part of the original mod.
On the other hand, it stops you from using invalid mods which allow people to cheat.

Ok, so hosting hacks on my site is ilegal... but what if i were to have a link another server with the download on it? (have no links to me)

hmm.. tricky one this.
You are giving people access to illegal material.
But you may just innocently be linking to a site which happens to host the download.
As I have said in posts in this forum - I am not a lawyer. I have not studied law. I can only give my opinion.
I think if the game is open source you should be OK hosting or making hacks. Also, linking to sites that host hacks is fine.
Good Luck,

that may be true, Paul, but a lot of hosts (i don't know if you're on your own server or hosted elsewhere) have a clause against even doing that in their TOS.

would that work??? According to the DMCA of 1999, you, the server and/or ISP and anyone else associated with your venture could be liable for copyright infringement (at the very least) for publishing hacks.

And from what I understand, things are going to get a whole lot worse.

OK, so wormhole is a cheap little game at http://www.centerfleet.com and I want a hack for it, like invicibility, no one will know because you can't see each other on the same game, you fire into wormholes and those things in the wormholes you fire, attack your enemy. If I could get invincibilty, I could laugh like crazy at my friends!!! :P or some other hack I dunno, check it out k?
just to mention, its a free game, unless you want to pay for the full and better game, but in my case its totally free.

umm... I was talking about wormhole... a free online game, which me and my friends play at school in the library. And theres these guys that keep going into my "locked" rooms, yes locked they're already cheating, and gang up on me, I want to get them back with something and drive them crazy!! cause practically all 20 of my library's good computers are used up by ppl playing Wormhole. So I really wanna start cheatin them out so they get mad or something and stop playing, either that or get back at them. :P

Take a look at what www.Gamefaqs.com and what www.Gamewinners.com did. E-mail them for advice, and other things.

You should be able to post hacks as long as they only change your game and not the masses.(like anything that will mess up any servers).
