I have recently opened my site which has been maded completely by me. The design was made by someone i know. I want to make my site copyright, but do i have to pay for the privallage of putting:
Copyright (C) 2002 My Site. All Rights Reserved.

Nope, you do not have to pay anything. You don't have to put the copyright notice to enjoy the protection of the copyright, but its standard practice to put it. But you could send me $20 and I will say 20 Hail Marys for you if you want :D

You can, DA, and you would have some legal standing, yes.
However, technically, the template belongs to you, but the design doesn't. Maybe get your friend to sign a dated contract, that indicates s/he did the work *for* you. That way, should someone come along at a later date, claiming that you've ripped him/her off, you're both covered.
It doesn't have to be a fancy contract all in legalese, either. Just a piece of paper stating that you requested so-and-so to design your website (and list the website by name) and that the design was completed and approved on such-and-such a date. And both of you sign it.
Something like that will cover not only people taking work from your site, but in the event that you should become rich and famous because of your site and then die suddenly, your estate will still hold the copyright for that design.
*g* At least, that's the way it was explained to me.

Kevin, not everyone is old enough to remember that some people used to buy forgiveness from the Church - and for about $20, too. *g* I knew you were old enough to remember stuff like that, but I didn't think you were.... um.... that is... well, it was a long time ago, you know. ;)
