Since I have to admit I hate pop ups, I was sort of glad to see this news!
A group of publishers this week sued the Gator online advertising network ( news - external web site) in a bid to bar the company from serving pop-up ads on their Web sites without their permission.

Okay, I'm a bit slow, so you'll have to pardon me. *g*
Opening a new window is an HTML command, isn't it? And it's Javascript that makes the new window appear underneath the original window, isn't it?
Now, my "Javascript for Dummies" was published in 2000, which means that the scripting for it had to be around *before* 2000. (It takes a bit of time for the books to be written, proofed, printed and bound, you know. )
So how do these guys figure they have a patent on Javascript commands. Last I heard, that belonged to Sun.
Doesn't it?

Java belongs to Sun. Javascript belongs to Netscape. ;)

Oh good grief, I thought they both meant the same thing - Java code! Do I get an "A" in the  department!?!?!
Are those -well, no, let me just ask, what exactly is the difference, if I may? I'm serious - I have no clue!

java=more of a programming language,it's used to make applets(small applications to run on sites)aswell as full applications for computers(example, zapspot uses java applets for their games I believe).
javascript=is a scripting language used for adding 'dynamic' stuff to sites.although it is a short description...hopefully it helps ya out there jeni...:D

<groan> Hmmm.... That could be why I'm having problems figuring out the stuff. *g*
Either way, though, the language is available to everyone.
I write. I take the same English or French words that everyone else has available to them and create stories. The best that I can ever hope to do is to have the work copyrighted. It's not so much for the language, but the characters I create.
But spoken languages are a lot more flexible than computer languages. If I tell you in English that "A dog bit a man", you'll understand it just as easily as if I'd said "A man was bitten by a dog."
If those sentences were bits of programming language, the same thing would apply. They both tell the same story, but in different ways and in different tenses. The best that should be reached is that the work can be copyrighted, but patented? Since when can you patent a common language?
<sigh> Every time I think I've got "business sense", someone comes along and robs my piggybank.
