button bar menu, active stays "pressed"

Hi all,

We have a series of gif's lined on the top of the navigation form -

what we would like is for the gif that was just clicked
via an anchor tag to stay in the depressed image...

we have tried the onclick, and the onexit events, but the on exit even changes the onclick event (we change to a different gif when mouseovered)

is there a way to keep the presses anchor tag (image) the active image after the click has happened???

The user would like the images to change as the mouse floats over them, then they would like the image of the clicked image to remain the active one, until a different one is clicked...
