I got this email. It said find jdbgmgr.exe and delete it, it's a virus. I found it, but am afraid to open it, even afraid to right-click and choose properties... Opinions? Delete it?

I suspect it's really a system file, rumoured to be a virus. I don't want to delete an important file....
If it's a virus, what's it do?

Forwarded Email by a typical paranoid friend:

I have found a bear icon!

>>I just received notification that our address book had been
>>infected by a virus (called jdbgmgr.exe) not detected by Norton or
>>McAfee antivirus systems. The virus stays dormant for 14 days
>>before damaging the system.
>>>It is sent automatically by the Messenger and by the address book,
>>>whether or not you send emails to your contacts.
>>>
>>>We checked, found it, and deleted it without damage to our
>>>systems. The instructions are below.
>>>
>>>1. Go to Start, Find (or Search) option 2. In the Files/Folders
>>>option, write the name jdbgmgr.exe 3. Be sure you are searching
>>>your hard drive (usually C:) 4. Click "find now" 5. The virus has
>>>a little bear as an icon with the name jdbgmgr.exe. DO NOT OPEN
>>>IT. 6. Right-click on the icon and delete it. It will then go to
>>>the Recycle Bin. 7. Go to the recycle bin, find the file, and
>>>right-click again to delete it there as well, or empty your bin.

jdbgmgr - Javascript debug manager.

It's supposed to be there, PL. At least, that's what I've been told. But what it does is beyond me. :) Debugs Javascript?

posti,

right clicking will give you information on the file... not run it. Anytime you get what you think may be a virus, diconnect from the internet/ network and immediately run your virus scan. This protects those around you intially.

THen, you can pop by google, or any one of the many virus scan site... norton, mcafree, symantec and do a search on the subject line/ virus name.

Sometimes a little effort on your part goes a long way.

Knew it had to be a hoax. A file with that accurate a description can't be a random infection.

I never believed right-clicking would actually cause it to execute, just a 0.001% paranoia I have now removed. Good network idea, I'll keep it mind, although not applicable here at home. Right! I forgot virus sites document hoaxes, thanks for the research

I feel sorry for my friend. He believed it and forwarded it.

That is not a virus. You are right, it is an important file and should not be deleted.

Two steps you can take to help yourself can be enabled in Windows Explorer.

In the options, untick the box "Hide File Extensions for Known File Types" so that you always see the true file extension for every file on your hard disk.

Then run Windows Explorer in "detailed list" mode so that the date and time is displayed next to every file.

For this warning, you would have noticed that the file as the same date and time as nearly all of the other files in the \Windows directory.
