View Full Version : What is a good html editor to use?
Hi,
I use NS composer to do my editing, but what I would like is an editor that will allow me to grab my page off the net and edit the html code and then post it straight back to the net. Currently I have to open the page, edit it, set it back up, save it to my HDD and then post it back on the net. It is so slow and time consuming.
Does anyone know a package that would be suitable for my use.?
Thanks

Hey Ian,
Actually I think that composer does have a feature to upload right to the web. It's under the "publish" feature.
Don't let Jake catch you using Netscape though. I created the new 123webmaster design using composer, and he had one heck of a time incorporating into the links2.0 template because of the markup it left. FrontPage is just as bad.
There are a few good WYSIWYG editors though that don't create markup. I can't think of them off hand though. Anybody know of one?

C'mon guys... What's wrong with good old notepad and ftp?
It sounds like your going to want an editor with publishing capabilties. I'm sure you've heard of Frontpage (most widely used, and built into most webhosts these days).
You may also want to checkout HomeSite (from allaire)
http://www.allaire.com/Products/HomeSite/overview.cfm
They have some nice FTP features built in,
here is a clip from that page:
<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>
Leverage HomeSite’s integrated FTP and Site Deployment Wizard to easily deploy your site while creating a reusable, shareable deployment script.

I have a feeling dreamweaver (from macromedia) has some FTP features built in also, but now your getting into some more professional programs (which mean $$$).
Hope this helps http://talkboard.123webmaster.com/ubbhtml/smile.gif

What I'd link to get my hands on is a text editor that will format the text nicely, and indent the text where indents are necessary. I've seen a few things that will do this, and check to see if thre are the correct number of closing tags, etc. I actually thought that I had a copy of something like this a while back, but for the life of me I don't remember what ti was called.

Hi again,
I recently downloaded Arachnophilia 4.0, I have only just began to use it, and find for just editing a page that has already been built, could be a very efficient tool. So far anyway. By the way, it's also free - must be worth looking into more http://talkboard.123webmaster.com/ubbhtml/smile.gif

I think you should try all the major titles (with the exception of Front Page, do I hear the trash can calling?) With the knowledge of what works best for your needs in mind, you can make a choice about what you want.
BTW, Ian, Jake, or Jason if you want any Macromedia products contact me..I'll get you the stuff for free. (I have friends in high places you might say...hehheh)
Note to Jake: Notepade & FTP? YEAH! only way to go man.
(Not that we mean to put you software people down--well not to much anyway!)

oh goodie, it's time for the good old html editor fight...hopefully none of you are too tired after the dhtml v flash clash http://talkboard.123webmaster.com/ubbhtml/wink.gif
i keep coming back to notepad too, which i can't understand really because unfortunately i'm not one of those hardcore purists yet! http://talkboard.123webmaster.com/ubbhtml/smile.gif
i first made pages using ms word's wysiwyg editor, which was really good to begin with but i have nightmares even thinking about using that now. i have tried loads of freeware non-wysiwyg ones but never really stuck to any of them.
well, actually 1st page 2000 (from http://www.evrsoft.com ) is quite good. is freeware but it is a complete package and looks really professional. it has different modes (beginner to advanced) and you can customise it totally. it puts in tabs as far as i know and all the code gets colour coded. there is a built in code compressor, html validator and you can save certain bits of code in your own library. there is also a big javascript library that comes with it for those of us who can't write our own http://talkboard.123webmaster.com/ubbhtml/smile.gif (actually i have just started learning - know any good resources??)
anyway, it does loads more that i can't remember or be bothered with and might be worth a try.
bfn,
jalouda.

Ok time to add my say...
Personally I use Dreamweaver a HELL of a lot. (What can I say I'm a Macromedia Junky!) but to get down to the bare bones of HTML WYSIWYG really dont surfice. They allways have to jiggle your code about. For the nitty gritty editing I use a package called 1st page 2000 (best of all it's free) it nicely highlights code and can sweep code for unended tags. also I got out of the notepad world a while back by getting hold of NOTESPAD (subtle difference with the name, massive improvement.)
Well that's all i'd like to say apart from STEER CLEAR OF FRONTPAGE it by Microsoft need I say more?
Cheers

1st Page sounds like something I've been looking for. I think I'm going to drop by eversoft and pick up a copy. Here's a thought, does it, or do you guys know of a product that will get rid of that awful Netscape Composer markup?
While I envsion using 1st page for editing documents after they are composed, I just need to work visually with a WYSIWYG, and unfortunately I got hooked on Composer, one of the messier editors, when I was getting started. http://talkboard.123webmaster.com/ubbhtml/redface.gif

Notepad is great for debugging and editing. But what about multiple site deployment? Spell check and browser compatability checks? The best editor my company has (We have ALL THE ADOBE products, Frontpage.... the list goes on). The best has been hotmetal from softquad. It isn't just an editor it does everything. It is also one of the cheapest.
Hi guys - ever tried gnotepad+ for html-editing? if not give it a shot: http://gnotepad.sourceforge.net/

I can`t stand WSYWIG (WSYGWY? WYGSVY?) or whatever it is called. I want to have full overview over what I am doing. You can`t see that with WYSIWIG editors.
If anyone wants a very good editor which is also Free, I'd suggest AceHTML. Have a look here: http://freeware.acehtml.com/

Who has tried cutehtml?
It is the best, because it is straight html as you would do it in notepad, but it has html tag popups as you type so if you are not sure of the tag you need it pops it up for you.
I have dreamweaver, and when I first started doing webpages I used Visual Page, but now I only use cutehtml, because there is never gonna be a true WYSIWYG webpage editer, they only stuff the page up.
I hate cuteftp though.
I have tried just about everything out there, and the bests are cutehtml and aceftp.
You can easely get the crack for them both too.

I use Dreamweaver my self (home and at work) but I didn't see Netobject Fusion in the list.
It's a realy nice WYSIWYG Editor for those newbie html editors. You don't need any html experience unless you want to do some nasty **** but then I recomment Dreamweaver. It is because you have then a nice intergration of other web authering progams like flash our director or fireworks.

BTW: WYSIWYG means What You See Is What You Get...

This is not a WYSIWYG program, it is a text editor, Note Tab Lite. If you use Notepad or even Wordpad, you will want to check this program out, it is free and blows away Notepad but still has the same ease of use. Anyway, check it out at http://www.notetab.com/ .
It has features such as preview in browser button, strips HTML code, auto insertion of HTML tags, no 60K barrier like Notepad, wrap/no wrap, open multiple documents, will convert text files to HTML documents with one click, plus tons more options. It really is a great program. I just wish it would color code HTML like some of the other HTML editors do, but for free it ranks real high.
Regards,
Kevin

Macromedia Dreamweaver and Adobe GoLive! are the best editors that I've used. They should be, as they cost a ton. WYSIWYG is fine for begineers or those who do not have time to hand-write code, but hand-writing it is the best way as you'll know each and every piece of code yourself.

My editor of choice is cold fusion studio by allaire its basically a text editor but has a built in preview feature , it doesnt add any markup and it color codes different tags.
Also can open multiple pages at once and navigate them via tabs. And of course for those not to familiar with coding syntax they have shortcut buttons and automatic tag closing
I got hooked because i had to work with lots of cold fusion files with companies i work for.

I am for allaire products...homesite/ coldfusion/ kawa (JAVA).
they recognize portions of code, color code them for easy recognition. After using them, I still dont understand why anyone uses notepad? Unless, your in love with command prompt type interface....
