hi isaac,
so having found out all about our ftp habits, you now want to know the intimate details about our browsers...i think you have too much time on your hands!! http://talkboard.123webmaster.com/ubbhtml/wink.gif
seriously though, it's a really great that you are starting all these discussions. they make for interesting and enlightening debates and we're all learning something new http://talkboard.123webmaster.com/ubbhtml/cool.gif
anyway, enough waffling already!!!
i use IE5 and i think it's great. i find it easy to use, it very seldom crashes and it is easier to get my web pages to look right using it.
the only other browser i am quite familiar with is netscape communicator 4.6, which i have the misfortune of using at college. basically, i hate netscape http://talkboard.123webmaster.com/ubbhtml/mad.gif
regardless of how hard i work at making my site compatible with netscape, i never get it to look the same as in IE5, even though i don't really use browser specific features. the biggest problem i have is in getting it to display tables properly.
other things i dislike about netscape are that i can't make the window into full screen
mode and i can't use the enter key as much..netscape insists that i keep clicking with the mouse instead....but these are probably just things i can't figure out rather than actual faults with the browser!
it also crashes much more often than IE5 but that could be more to do with the network at college i suppose.
i am sure i could think of loads of other things i hate if i was using it every day but i am on holidays from college at the moment http://talkboard.123webmaster.com/ubbhtml/tongue.gif
i have never used any other browsers apart from the two main ones, mainly because i am happy with IE5 http://talkboard.123webmaster.com/ubbhtml/smile.gif
well that's what i think...i'm looking forward to hearing everyone else's thoughts http://talkboard.123webmaster.com/ubbhtml/smile.gif

Hi All,
Jalouda, here are some other goodies that you left out regarding Netscape:
<UL TYPE=SQUARE>
<LI>It doesn't support table border colors
<LI>It sucks
<LI>It has problems with CSS
<LI>It sucks
<LI>It doesn't display any content inside a table unless all information has been loaded
<LI>It sucks
<LI>It doesn't compile as clean as IE
<LI>Anything else I left out? oh yeah...it sucks.
</UL>
Other than that though, I think it's a fine browser. Anoyone with extra time on their hands that would like to increase the time that they spend looking at dead white space should go to Netscape (http://www.netscape.com) right away and download a dozen copies.
To further express your gratitude to the owners of this fine product, drop AOL a line. They now own Netscape, and provide an excellent ISP service. Absolutely 100% reliable and efficient. This is a team up made in heaven.

WOW!
I thought that I was the only one that hated Netscape so much. While I hate to support the tyranny of Microsoft, I have to say that their web browser is FAR superior!!!
Netscape makes all of my work look and load like DOG POOP!! I never even bothered to look at those other gimicky browsers, I'd hate to imagine what my web pages look like in those..eeech!!!!
Anyway, you;re right about AOL...they suck too, all those hangups, all those busy signals, I hated using them, I didn't know thet they also owned Netscape. That IS a match!! LOL!
Well, maybe They will get it together in 7.0 since they totally botched 6.0 (where the hell are their #5's anyway? are they just trying to seem more advanced than IE?)
Peace, let me know if I'm right, or if I'm just talking SMACK!

Welcome to the club everyone.
If you need my views on Netscape, please see above comments.
Notes:
1. I started this thread to gather info for our new review of browsers.
2. I love prying into peoples lives
3. NN 5.0 never came out because Netscape was so far behind that they decided to call it 6.0 instead. Really.
(They were all using AOL to connect and could never get online. No wonder 5.0 never happened...)

I like it when netscape crashes, and then the feedback agent comes up, i press send, and the feedback agent crashes. http://talkboard.123webmaster.com/ubbhtml/mad.gif

Well I use Netscape, what are you trying to say? Do you think that microsoft is perfect? I'm sure it has bugs too!!!

I don't mean to say that I believe IE is perfect, however the only problem I've ever had with it is that when there is an error, all of my IE windows close insted of 1.
Now with Netscape, If I listed all of the errors in it...let's just say that in my mind, using it as a coster is much more profitable.

Isaac,
You forgot to mention how much frontpage has also come along in relation to Netscape's composer. Frontpage doesn't leave that messy markup any more like the old days, and they've made leaps and bounds withtheir features. On the other hand, Netscape still shreds 3rd party scripts, such as counters, and banners, and it alters your html page with twice as many garbage characters as your web page had to begin with.

Good point. I'll keep that in mind.
However, I still, (yes still), think that Notepad is the only way to go.
Now how did we get started on editors all of a sudden?

Notepad? Maybe for your "projects", but us real men use WordPad. Triple the character space, for heavy duty websites http://talkboard.123webmaster.com/ubbhtml/wink.gif

Oh yeah... netscape sucks. When it comes down to it, netscape is just slower in everything it does. And you can't blame it on Microsofts ties w/ intel (if anyone even knows what I'm talking about).
I say the government should force every browser to use the same "HTML Engine" to start from, (basic tags etc...). Then each browser has the option to expand upon those, with there own unique tags and features.

As have only just found this forum and have found it quite educational as well as entertaining,i must admit that after reading this current thread that i feel quite releived to find that a lot of you guys are having trouble with nn.
being what i would consider myself as a rookie with high ambitions,nn nearly broke my heart as well as my marraige in trying to have a website project(educational-student) compatible in both browsers.I agree that Ie was the browser i was happy with until i tested the site in nn.(appalling)
and although our group was using standard HTML we were trying with the v4 (css2) If the two major players(?) cannot agree on standards where does that leave the newbies. Our teacher informed us that the site had to be compatible between the 2 major browsers. we did our best but overcame this limitation by quoting the lastest thoughts from webmasters on the net about designing for one browser only and designed for Ie formost and acknoledge that fact
newk
Ps keep the Q/A's coming ,i am learning heaps more here.

UNfortunately we have to design for IE 5.0/ 5.5 netscape 4.7.
Netscape 6? No, we arent required to test on it yet. Thank the lord! I used to hate netscape 4.7, but then netscape 6 came out. Honestly...they should have stayed with 4.7. Now I am really good at coding to meet IE and netscape 4.7. while totally ignoring N6. All in all netscape is supposed to make us code for more XML'ish type of development. IE will render a page when you forget ending form/ table/ whatever tags...whiile netscape is more strict. IE allows us to be messy, but also supports a much wider range of tags, attributes, style sheets etc. I think we would all agree that making tight code would be ok, if both browsers supported the same tags.
