What kind of FTP does everyone here use? I've heard complaints from 2 guides here that their FTPs can't handle a normal sized load. My WSFTP has always been there for me with no problems. What are your woes?
I've got a gripe about my first-ever ftp, cuteftp. I don't know if this was because I didnt register it, but it did not seem to have the ability to chmod files, now that's just weak.
Has anyone else had success with anything other than wsftp?

i have only ever tried cute ftp and ws ftp. i couldn't get cute ftp to work at all when i downloaded it, but i have found wsftp to be brilliant. it is easy to use and reliable. once i tried it i was determined to never use browser uploading again!

I take it you won't be getting an account at httpcity then Jal http://talkboard.123webmaster.com/ubbhtml/smile.gif.
I now use 2 ftp programs, I mostly use ACEFTP, it a good program for standard use and has a good layout unlike other ftp managers, it is quick and easy to use and doesn't give much trouble. The only troubles I have had with it, seems to be more from lack of knowing what it is capible of and the only other problem with it is that because of its GUI, it locks up when trying to render an online directory that has to many files in it. At what limit is can no longer handle it, I am not sure, but it can't view the httpcity dir that has over 5000 files in it http://talkboard.123webmaster.com/ubbhtml/smile.gif, so I think the average user is pretty safe there.
As a result I have downloaded ws ftp, and it handles it fine as it is less graphical, however I think it is an ugly boring looking program.
Summery:: One works well but looks bad, the other looks good is easy to use but can't hack the big stuff, so I have them both installed. http://talkboard.123webmaster.com/ubbhtml/smile.gif

Dear Jason,
Since it seems that we use a varity
of FTP clients, what do you think of doing a compleate rundown of say the top ten FTPs? This information, though it night sound basic , in my opinon would be of great use to beginners and pros alike.
Those of you who would be intrested in something like this please give us your
thoughts. http://talkboard.123webmaster.com/ubbhtml/smile.gif

Isaac,
Sounds good, it'd be interesting to compare them all. However I have nothing but ASFTP myself. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get this off the ground? Should we break it up, and everyone take an FTP? This could be helpful to a lot of our visitors.
Ian: actually httpcity has over 20,000 files, it could be as high as 50,000. I don'r recall off the top of my head though.

Hey Isaac,
Can you start us off here by posting the various FTPs that you know of? After then we can try to see what features each has, and see how they stand up against eachother. I think trying to read the httpcity directory will be one good test of an FTP's strength.

Jason,
Ian is referring to loading the root httpcity dir, where all member directories reside. Thus how many members httpCITy currently has = number of files being loading (99% of them). 1% = index.html, faq.html, etc...
I use ws_ftp, however I do have experience with the following:
<A HREF="http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,,00098W,.html" TARGET=_blank>FTP Explorer
</A>
Company: Alan Chavis
Version: 1.00.01
Size: 661.60 KB
Downloads: 138,673
It uses a windows explorer-based interface.

Jake:
"Do you want a little review from me? or are you going to just grab the description from the above link?"
We're doing more than just "little reviews" and the publisher's own words with these reviews. I want to see how each FTP stands up under heavy duty use, check their speeds, their faults, evaluate their interface, and discuss their features. I'd like to reveal everything there is to know about the FTP. So when you do your review, leave no feature unturned!

Isaac,
To my knowledge cute FTP can't chmod! It's ben a while since I used it, but that's what my memory tells me. If I'm rightm, it's got some serious problems.

Okey dokey.
I'll get you a list of everything I like and dislike about ws_ftp, and ftp explorer.
ws_ftp will be the easiest since it's what I use all the time, however it does have it's problems http://talkboard.123webmaster.com/ubbhtml/smile.gif
Maybe these reviews will change some of the programs we ourselves use, when compared to others.
I'll be in touch http://talkboard.123webmaster.com/ubbhtml/cool.gif

I just wanted to let everybody know that because of the post that I am making now, this has become the first "flaming folder" on the talkboard. So not only have I posted more than anybody else, but I have also hit this milestone first. http://talkboard.123webmaster.com/ubbhtml/biggrin.gif

I use FTP Voyager from Rhino Software (http://www.rhinosoft.com). It's one of the best and it has a clean interface and is highly customisable.

I've tried, ws ftp and found it difficult to use, cute ftp has many good features but the built in Coffee Cup html editor ftp program looks really nice and has all the features you would ever need.

Is there an appreciable difference between the LE version and the PRO versions? I am currently using LE it seems to work OK? Also, is there a way to make this client go to a particular sub folder on the local drive every time it is launched?

The Pro version obviously more features, since you pay for your copy. The LE version is free and has limited features.
