Hi Jones,
Welcome to the board. Well, while search engine placement may no longer be the #1 priority for webmasters due to the decline of free listings, it is still pretty important. Some search engines (such as google) are still capable of delivering a large amount of traffic to your website. "Optimizing" your site for the search engines is just a fancy way of saying "playing with the meta tags and the keywords in the content". A good way to do this is by checking out they meta tags for sites that already have a good listing for the search words that you would like to have good placement for as well. While I do not suggest that you outright copy the meta tags of your competitors, you can use them to get a good feel of what will work in terms of giving you decent placement.
Can optimizing really make a difference in your placement? You betcha. It's sometimes tough to make the top 10 results by accident, and there is a world of difference in the traffic that you will get from the first page to the second page of results.

hey jones, search engine optimization supposedly modifies web page source code and content thus giving the “searchers” better results with their queries. Stuff like that… you could perhaps find more read on this at http://www.cfmcorp.net
