Who has opinions on PaintShop and PhotoShop? Which do you use? Personally, I use PaintShop, probably because it is just easier, although I have a feeling that PhotoShop is more powerful. I actually miss some of the old features on earlier PaintShops (v. 5 and lower) where you could edit individual pixels much more easily. I do enjoy playing with all the new filters and effects though. What's your opinion?

I only used photoshop before, but have some friends using paintshop pro. Photoshop IS more powerful than paintshop, and it also have lots of third party filters. Haven't tried version 6 yet, but version 5.5 is already very useful. If u already know how to use paintshop, learning how to use photoshop should be quite easy, as the basic concept remains.....

Simple photo editing for internet use (resize, crop, jpg convert/compress etc) I usually use IrfanView.

For almost all other internet graphics, re-edits, graphics from scratch, some animations, photo editing such as touch ups or color enhancments, blending images, combining images, woking with layers or masks, I use Paint Shop Pro 5 or 6. (I haven't tried version 7 yet.) I do like the improvements Jasc made from version 5 to version 6. The screen capture feature of Paint Shop Pro has always been very handy.

Anything I can't do with PSP 5 or 6 I use PhotoShop or Photo-Paint. Or at least I try to.... :)

I think the average user will find Paint Shop Pro or maybe PhotoImpact (by Ulead) much easier to learn and versatile enough to do anything they need.

Advanced users and professionals will want the power and versatility of PhotoShop or Photo-Paint. Especially if designing layouts for printing where they have a tremendous advantage over Paint Shop Pro.

Hey Kevin, if you liked the changes from PsP5 to PsP6, then PsP7 will blow you away !! It is packed will goodies and has some really useful features not in PsP6, it is worth the download.
PsP6.02 is 14,580 KB to download
PsP 7 is a massive 32,822 KB.

First time I have heard anyone mention PhotoImpact, I have that on a cd that came with my scanner but have never ever installed it, I might do so to have a look at what it can do now, thanks :).

Ian,

You've piqued my interest. I will have to take a look at PSP7. Ulead PhotoImpact like all paint programs, gets better with each version. I have an old SE version I got with a digital camera, SE 3.01. But even that old version is pretty good (but no GIF format). No layer support in that version, but lots of features the average home user would like. Create albums and lots of special effects. I'm sure the newer versions are way better. Ulead has many great programs, check out their website when you have time.

Regards,
Kevin

Not really familiar with paint shop pro but photoshop 6.0 is a god send. They are moving more toward a total desktop publishing package with this release. They have several new effects that before were only in programs like corel draw. For example warped text effects. Curving text is as easy as clicking a button now.

Im sure pain shop pro is just as good but i think ill stick with photoshop.

PaintShop (http://www.jasc.com) has the slight edge over PhotoShop, both in power and price: USD 79.99 for PSP, USD 479.00 for PhotoShop. PaintShop is the ideal product for webdesigners.
